We’re racing back at Wyong on Sunday afternoon after a short turnaround from the Wednesday meeting there. The rail has moved back to the true position the entire circuit, so look for a minor on-speed bias, particularly early in the program. There are some showers expect for Sunday, so we’re going to be looking at something in the Soft to Heavy range come the first race. Racing gets underway at 1pm AEDT.
Best bet: Competition
Competition looks ready to win here third up over the 1600m for the James Cummings yard. This son of Shooting To Win has been crying out to step up in trip and sees that on Sunday afternoon at Wyong. His two starts this preparation over the 1200m and 1350m both had plenty of merit as Competition made inroads from well back in the field to just miss the placings into fourth and fifth respectfully. He had also been having a shocking time drawing a barrier, coming up with barriers 11 and 13, while this time he should get a terrific run much closer to the speed than his previous efforts. Mitchell Bell keeps the ride here and provided he can get Competition to jump on even terms, he should be in behind the leaders and just need some luck turning for home to be beating this field in rather convincing fashion to be a maiden no more.

Next best: Justina
The opening race at Wyong is a Class 1 over the 1100m and should see the return of Justina for the Brad Widdup team. This three-year-old filly has had just one start for one win and looks to be resuming in terrific order for Sunday afternoon. She’s had two barrier trials since being tipped out and both showed she’s ready to go here, particularly the latest trial at Rosehill on December 29 which saw the filly be ridden along to score. The in form Brett Prebble takes the reins here and from barrier four should look to take luck out of the equation by pinging the lids and press forward to lead them up, before kicking clear of her rivals. She’s a classy type and provided she can handle the testing conditions, she’s very hard to beat.

Best value: Moonflower
The first leg of the quaddie is a race stacked full of dual acceptors, so we’re taking on some of the favoured gallopers like Boston City and Time To Boogie with Moonflowers, with thinking they’ll accept for the maiden at Kembla Grange on Saturday. Regardless, if they line up here or not, Moonflowers looks a very progressive type for the James Cummings yard and they’ve taken their time with this now three-year-old filly out of Lonhro. She’s been a trial star at both two and three, but this is the first occasion we get to see her step out in a race proper, and despite it looking an open maiden, what we’ve seen at the trials makes her a keen bet at around $7 with online bookmakers. Rachel King took the reins in one of her five official trials, so she knows this filly well and will look to sit midfield with cover throughout before peeling off the leaders to score.
