Racing returns to Werribee Racecourse for the second time in three weeks, with a very competitive eight-race card scheduled this Sunday. The track is currently rated a Soft 6; however, with good weather forecast for the weekend, we should be close to a Good 4 by raceday. The rail will be in the +3m position for the entire circuit, with racing to kick off at 1:20pm AEDT.
Best Bet at Werribee – Catskill Mountain
In the fifth race of the day over 2000m, the Andrew Bobbin-trained Catskill Mountain will be looking to win back-to-back races after a dominant victory first-up at Kyneton over 1875m on November 28. This son of Rip Van Winkle has a very good record at 2000m, winning two and placing in one from his four goes at the trip throughout his career. His second-up form is good as well, with one win from two second-up runs, including a win over 2000m last campaign. Harry Coffey will stick with this gelding after riding him last start at Kyneton when he recorded a very impressive win by 4.5 lengths, as he looks to record his third win at his sixth ride on this guy. From barrier 11, we should see Coffey take his medicine and drop to the back of the field and look to run on.

Next Best at Werribee – Rain Lord
The Peter & Paul Snowden-trained Rain Lord will be looking to complete a hattrick of wins in race seven, after recording back-to-back wins at Tatura and Werribee in his last two starts over 1000m and 1100m. This son of Lord Of The Sky is coming off an impressive win at this track and trip last start, where Michael Poy took up the lead and kicked clear on the home turn to record a 1.3 length victory. On Sunday, Poy will take the reins again where he should be able to settle outside the leader from barrier seven, with the other natural leader, Takshaka, giving him a cart across from barrier six. With many of his rivals dropping back in distance to the 1100m, it should suit this guy to set a moderate tempo and look to up the ante on the home bend before kicking away early in the straight, much like last start.

Best Value at Werribee – Splendid Chap
The 2000m Maiden Plate will see the Archie Alexander-trained Splendid Chap at his sixth career start where he will looking to break his maiden after finishing third at all three of his runs this preparation. At his most recent start over 1700m at Warrnambool, this three-year-old gelding gave them too much of a head start and made up a stack of ground in the final 400m, finishing third by just over a length. On Sunday this son of Tivaci will attempt 2000m for the first time in his career, which looks to be perfect for him after running strong through the line at his last two starts over 1600m an 1700m. Declan Bates has ridden this guy at his last two runs, where he settled at the rear of the field and ran on, so if Bates can have him within four lengths of the leaders in the final 600m, he should be able pick them up late.
