Country racing heads to the Central Western Slopes of NSW on Sunday afternoon for Wellington Cup Day. The feature race offers not only $100,000 in prizemoney, but also eligibility for The Big Dance on the first Tuesday of November. We’ve also got the $200,000 Wellington Boot for the two-year-olds. The rail is in the true position the entire circuit, and with Soft conditions expected, it should be a fair surface. The first of eight races at Wellington is set to get underway at 12:55pm AEDT.
Wellington Cup: For Valour
The Wellington Cup is raced over the 1700m and For Valour was too hard to go past on his form. He’ll be forced to lug a massive weight of 63kg; however, he earns every bit of that weight in a race lacking the depth of his form. For Valour was a winner at Canterbury two starts back on February 17 when making every post a winner over the 1550m at BM78 and carried 59kg on that occasion. He subsequently went to Canberra to race over the mile in open company last month running second behind Caesars Palace, who went on to place in the Group 2 Ajax Stakes. It looks the right form heading into Sunday and the Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott camp wouldn’t let him go around with this kind of weight without the intent of being hard to beat. Winona Costin will lead the entire 1700m journey and give a strong kick turning for home to score.

Wellington Boot: Quasimoto
The Wellington Boot looks a terrific race with chances scattered all over the page; however, we think Quasimoto presents at a nice price and gets the verdict as an each-way bet in the race. He comes here after a short 64-day let-up for trainer Clint Lindholm and has been a well-travelled two-year-old gelding since debuting back in November. He’s had four career starts for three minor placings to his name, the latest a solid hit out behind Party For Two at Doomben on January 21. You can tie that form into the Group 1 Blue Diamond as Party For Two wasn’t disgraced heading to Victoria. We love the break between runs for this son of Squamosa and the booking of Grant Buckley looks a key one. He’s taken the reins once before and it resulted in a career best behind Sovereign Fund at Wyong on December 14. If Quasimoto can replicate an effort like that on Sunday, we think he’s right in this $200,000 feature.

Best Bet at Wellington: In The Air Tonight
In The Air Tonight is an intriguing galloper for the Gayna Williams yard and we’re keen to with her in the first leg of the quaddie. She’s had two starts for one win and although the win came at Narromine on November 15, it was impressive visually. She cleared out by a length to break her maiden status and they since decided to head to the paddock. She now returns with one terrific jump out to her name and looks ready to be finding her second win on Sunday afternoon for this progressive type out of Skyclad. Grant Buckley sticks with this three-year-old and from barrier six should be able to find a spot somewhere mid-field before showing her electrifying best late to chalk up another win.
