First Race 2pm AEDT

Racing heads to western Sydney on Wednesday for a competitive seven-race program out of Warwick Farm. We should be in for picture-perfect conditions on raceday with sunny skies ahead and no rain expected for Wednesday afternoon. The rail sits in the true position for the entire circuit, while racing gets underway at 2pm AEDT. It looks an intriguing card, so let’s try and find some winners.

Best Bet: Awesome Wonder

In the fourth race on Wednesday, Awesome Wonder will be looking to chalk up career win number three when stepping up to the 2400m for the first time this preparation. Her second-up effort last week on November 16 at Rosehill when beaten 3.3 lengths wasn’t as bad as the margin may suggest; the field crawled turning for home and mid-race moves came from everywhere, leaving this daughter of Galileo a little flat-footed. However, if you watch the footage of her crossing the winning post, she looks ready for another lap. She’s just a dour type that has been crying out for this sort of trip. Kerrin McEvoy elects to stick, which gives us confidence she’s given him a similar feel after that effort, and while the seven-day backup may seem a strange strategy when going from the mile to 2400m, it looks ideal to us.

Next Best: Great Barrier Reef

Great Barrier Reef looks another great price with online bookmakers in this 1000m contest for the three-year-olds. He is stepping back significantly in class after a forgivable effort in the Coolmore Stud Stakes on October 29 and looks well placed again by Chris Waller to get another win on the board this preparation. His form behind quality three-year-olds Sejardan and Everest winner Giga Kick — just to name a couple — looks the best in the field for this BM68. While we respect the likes of Iowna Merc and Shadow Vampire, who have been in great form, we just love the price we’re getting for the well-raced Great Barrier Reef. The booking of James McDonald returning from a couple winners in Hong Kong is only a plus, while this colt by I Am Invincible has been craving a dry surface and should get that here. From barrier four, Great Barrier Reef should get the box seat in running and his class should prevail.

Best Value: Green Shadows

It’s D-Day for Green Shadows. We couldn’t resist giving this colt by Menari one last chance after getting too far back at Rosehill on November 16, where he was last turning for home before showing that vintage turn of foot to be blackbooked for punters. Although it is becoming costly sticking with this three-year-old, we are getting a cracking price as he finally steps up in trip to the 1600m after two runs at 1300m. He has drawn his best gate of the preparation here as well, after drawing seven of 10 then eight of eight. From barrier three, gun apprentice Zac Lloyd should be all but assured a great spot in running before unleashing a barnstorming finish to victory. If he doesn’t produce here, it may be time for Green Shadows to land in the ‘forget’ file.
