The solitary Victorian race meeting on Friday will be held at Wangaratta Racecourse as it hosts a competitive eight-race program. The track is currently rated a Good 4 and with good weather around the north-east of Victoria, we should still be on the current rating come race day. The rail will be in the +3m position from the 400m mark to the winning post and in the True position for the remainder of the circuit.
The first race will jump at 1:20pm AEDT.
Best Bet: Obfuscation
Our best bet of the day will be the Simon Zahra-trained Obfuscation, who will be on his very last chance for us when he competes in race six on Friday. After running five placing in a row this preparation and finishing second behind two smart ones at his last two starts, this Holler gelding has found a race that he should be winning at Wangaratta in a Benchmark 64. Two starts back at Sandown, this five-year-old finished less than a length off the unbeaten Tasman Park, and then last start he lost to another smart one in Riverplate, going down by a nose on the line. At all five of his starts this preparation, five of the seven runners that beat him, have gone on to win again, which means that this geldings form is the best in the race by a long way. Damien Thornton just needs to keep this gelding out of trouble and if he achieves that, he will be winning.

Next Best Bet: Zion
The final race of the day will feature the Nick Ryan-trained Zion, who had no luck at all at his first start for the new stable when he raced at Warrnambool on December 8 over 1100m. After missing the jump by a couple of lengths, he made up ground to hold a good position on the rail mid-field, and as the field rounded the home turn, this guy had a lot to give but he was stuck behind a wall of horses. On Thursday, this five-year-old gelding will be looking for his first victory since September of 2021. This son of Rubick has an impressive second-up record, with one win and a third placing from three starts throughout his career. Rhys McLeod will jump aboard for this run on Friday and if he can get this guy to jump with the field from barrier two and hold a prominent on-speed position, he will go very close to returning to the winners circle.

Best Value Bet: Miss Illuminate
Our best value bet will be Miss Illuminate from the Lee Hope yard, who will be second-up this preparation and her third start of her short career. This lightly race five-year-old mare was very good first-up when she ran on from the back of the field to go down narrowly by a nose at Kyneton over 1200m on December 15. This daughter of War has gone around at big odds with online bookmakers at her first two starts, and it will be no different on Friday, when she goes around in the Three-Years-Old and Upwards Maiden over 1300m. From barrier 14, she will most likely settle at the rear of the field and look to run on, but if she produces the same finish that she did last start, she will be go close once again.
