W.A.T.C. Derby

The WATC Derby is a Group 2 race for three-year-olds, run over 2400m at Ascot by the Western Australia Turf Club.

First held in 1888, the WATC Derby is one of Perth’s oldest and most prestigious races, traditionally run under set weights.

Originally part of the Perth Cup summer carnival, the WATC Derby moved to April in 1988, briefly returned to summer in the early ’90s, and has remained in the autumn since 2002.

The WATC Derby held Group 1 status from 1979 to 1991 and again from 1994 to 2011 before being downgraded to Group 2.

The 2024 WATC Derby, worth $400,000, was won by A Lot Of Good Men, defeating Buckets Ridge and Lord Vampi.

Fillies have enjoyed success in the WATC Derby, with 11 winning since 1994.

Notable past winners include Eurythmic, Dayana, Joindre, Plastered, Delicacy, Regal Power, Western Empire, and Awesome John.

William Pike is the leading rider with 11 Derby wins, while Grant and Alana Williams have trained eight winners.

• 2024: A Lot Of Good Men ends a run of outs
  A Lot Of Good Men broke through for a deserved stakes win in the 2024 Group 2 WATC Derby (2400m) at Ascot, ending a run of five stakes placings. Trained by Trevor Andrews and ridden by Jarrad Noske, the son of A Lot settled midfield before powering home to score by 2.25 lengths over Buckets Ridge, with Lord Vampi a close third. The mile-and-a-half trip proved ideal as he stormed clear in the final furlong to claim the $400,000 feature.
• 2023: Awesome John arrives in time
  Awesome John delivered a perfectly timed run to take out the Group 2 WATC Derby (2400m) at Ascot, providing jockey William Pike with his 11th win in the race in 18 years. Trained by John O’Shea, the son of Awesome Rock settled near the rear before sweeping wide on the turn and finishing strongly to defeat Another Chino by a length. She’s Fit ran on well for third, three-quarters of a length away. The victory capped a successful hit-and-run raid for the Sydney-based gelding, who came off a strong third in the Group 3 Tulloch Stakes at Rosehill.
• 2022: Alaskan God makes a mess of rivals
  Alaskan God stamped himself as a stayer of the future with a dominant win in the Group 2 W.A.T.C. Derby (2400m) at Ascot. Trained by Dan Morton and ridden by Chris Parnham, the son of Playing God overcame traffic issues from worse than midfield before unleashing a powerful turn of foot down the centre of the track. He surged clear to win by 3.25 lengths over Pale Rider, with Black Fantasy another 1.25 lengths away in third. The victory marked Alaskan God’s fifth straight win.
