Flemington Best Bet – Espiona
Coming off a dominant debut maiden win at Warwick Farm on October 13, we expect the Chris Waller-trained Espiona to remain undefeated after two career starts. Having gained the run of the race on debut when settling on the leader’s back, James McDonald had the Extreme Choice filly on terms entering the home straight where she quickly put a couple of lengths on her rivals and the rest was history. From a mid-week maiden to a Listed race on Oaks Day is a big step up in grade, but Espiona showed plenty of promise leading into her debut and if she brings a similar sort of effort from the trials and that Warwick Farm maiden form, she should be too strong late for this field.
Flemington Next Best Bet – Sirileo Miss
We will be hoping that the Symon Wilde-trained Sirileo Miss can make it three wins from as many starts as she steps out in the Inglis Bracelet over 1600m. The four-year-old Pride Of Dubai mare was a gritty winner of the Group 3 Ladies Day Vase at Caulfield on October 13 when beating Foxy Frida, and we think she can keep Foxy Friday at bay once again on Thursday. She looks to be the only runner in the race who will want to go forward and take up the running and we expect Sirileo Miss to gain an uncontested lead. Although Craig Williams is struggling to find winners this Melbourne Spring Carnival, we expect he will find his way back into the winner’s stall aboard Sirileo Miss.
Flemington Value Bet – Dream Queen
The Ben & JD Hayes-trained Dream Queen bounced back from a poor Australian debut at Mornington on October 7, when bouncing back to claim the Listed William Crockett Stakes on October 23. Having settled midfield on the back of a genuine speed, the Super Easy filly managed to pick up the leaders nicely in the home straight and did enough to grip on in the shadows of the winning post. From barrier one, Luke Nolen will need a little luck at a crucial time, but if he and the Kiwi filly is afforded that, the turn of foot Dream Queen possesses should be the difference here and send us a home a winner on Oaks Day.
