In terms of quality, the first metropolitan meeting for July was a bit of a disappointment. Rosehill Gardens was abandoned after race five, the Sunshine Coast raced on a Heavy track, and Flemington hosted Winter Finals Day, so a lot of horses were having their last run for the campaign – and it showed. Here at The Follow Files, we have found you a couple of horses that we can track in the hope they push on deeper into the winter.
Flemington | Track: Soft 6 | Rail: True Entire Course
Race 2: Next Gen Sprinters Final 2YO (1200m) | Time: 1:11.65
- Horse to follow: VAGRANT (4th)
Mitchell Freedman’s two-year-old VAGRANT was an impressive winner on debut at Swan Hill, swooping late to win against the older horses. The filly by Pariah went straight to town subsequent to that win, and while she didn’t keep her unbeaten record intact, she was very good late. It did look to take Vagrant a little while to get into her work, and by then, the race was practically over. She still lifted late and got within a length of the talented Thron Bone and another eye-catching debutant in Without Envy.
When to bet: Freedman took a couple of runners to Adelaide on Saturday, so we wouldn’t be surprised to see him target the Listed Oaklands Plate over 1400m at Morphettville on July 16. The rise to 1400m should suit her down to the ground, and the big track will be to her liking. In time, she could be a Thousand Guineas horse.
Two wins on the trot for this 2YO!

Sunshine Coast | Track: Heavy 8 (Heavy 9 after R1; Heavy 10 after R4) | Rail: True Entire Course
Race 4: 3YO Handicap (1000m) | Time: 1:00.52
- Horse to follow: MUSCHIALLI (6th)
We have always had a bit of time for Tony Gollan’s MUSCHIALLI, so we are keen to see how he returned on Saturday. The son of Better Than Ready always gets back in his races, so that was never going to help his chances given the way the track played. In the straight, Muschialli started to make his run but got squeezed out of it and had no clear running. While he wouldn’t have won that race, he was entitled to finish closer.
When to bet: Just follow Muschialli now, as he will be winning a race in the near future. Hopefully, the tracks dry a bit in Brisbane and surrounding areas, as we have no doubt he will find a suitable race shortly.
