The Todman Stakes is a Group 2 race for two-year-old colts and geldings, run over 1200m under set weights at Royal Randwick.
A key lead-up to the Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m), the Todman Stakes winner gains ballot exemption to the juvenile feature two weeks later.
First run as the Todman Slipper Trial in 1973, it was renamed the Todman Stakes in 2005.
The Todman Stakes became Listed in 1979, Group 3 in 1980, and was elevated to Group 2 in 1986.
Six horses have completed the Todman–Golden Slipper double, most recently Farnan in 2020.
Notable past winners include Luskin Star, Pierro, Marauding, Exceed And Excel, Criterion, Yes Yes Yes, Anamoe, and Cylinder.
Highlighting just how important the Todman Stakes is, the 2021 field featured future stars Anamoe, Home Affairs, and Stay Inside, who all went on to claim Group 1 victories.
The 2024 Todman Stakes, worth $300,000, was won by Switzerland, defeating Straight Charge and Shangri La Express.

Switzerland ($3.60) took out the 2024 Group 2 Todman Stakes to remain undefeated after claiming victory in the main lead-up race for colts for the Golden Slipper. The Chris Waller-trained colt made it three wins from as many starts and after jumping as the second favourite with online bookmakers, behind only Straight Charge ($2.80), the son of Snitzel proved too strong at the end of 1200m. Straight Charge led the field at a good clip and set the race up for a runner to run on strong from midfield, and that is exactly what the winner did, thanks to a calm and perfectly timed ride from McDonald. The leader was able to hold on for second place and Shangri La Express ($13.00) got into clear air late to run home into third place behind the top two.

Cylinder got the better of the pre-race Golden Slipper second favourite, Red Resistance in the 2023 Group 2 Todman Stakes. Going into the traditional Group 2 lead-up for the Golden Slipper for the colts and geldings, both the winner and runner-up jumped as the favourite and second favourite with online bookmakers. As the field hit the top of the home straight it appeared as though punters had got the betting spot on, with Red Resistance leading them up and kicking clear with 300m to go, however, under the urgings of James McDonald, Cylinder chased him down with 100m to go and recorded a very nice victory.

Sejardan returned to winning ways in the 2022 Group 2 Todman Stakes at Royal Randwick, sticking his hand up as a leading chance in the Golden Slipper. The Gary Portelli-trained son of Sebring won his first two career starts, before returning with an unlucky third in the Inglis Millennium at his previous start. Sejardan did get a fair way back in the eight-horse field, but the classy two-year-old proved too good for his rivals, circling the field to win by over half a length to Boyfriend and Shalatain.
