Andrew How good is the Waterloo Cup? Now in its 149th year, this race captured the imagination of sporting fans all over Victoria back in its heyday.
Peter Even I wasn’t around back then, but I love that coursing is still in existence, and is actually growing in popularity among the younger generation of trainers who realise how good it is for a greyhound’s confidence and fitness levels.
Gerard Speaking of young trainers, I spoke to James Shaw this week, who has three greyhounds in the quarter finals, which is a huge effort. He reckons Master Ogilvie is his best chance.
Andrew I see James also has litter sisters Crabby Yabby and Nine Nine up against each other in the quarters. It’s a shame though that Big Opal Rocks, one of Australia’s quickest greyhounds, is an unlikely starter after pulling up lame on Day 1 of the series.
Peter I’m excited to see how the Peter Craig-trained He’s No Slouch goes on Sunday. He’s a litter brother to Wow She’s Fast and he actually made last month’s Group 1 Maturity Classic Final.
Gerard Peter certainly has a lifetime of experience in coursing, being the National Coursing Association President, but Murray Collyer is a coursing stalwart himself and he’ll have Rothwell Chunk cherry ripe on Sunday.
Andrew You could be on to something there, Gerard, as Rothwell Chunk has already won this year’s Victoria Derby and the Sylvester Doyle Puppy Championship.
Gerard It would also be great to see Madam Maximus do well, as it’s probably the biggest race that her trainer Julia Creed has ever been involved in.
Andrew I actually spoke to Julia today. She works full-time and only trains two dogs, so she’d be over the moon if her Madam Maximus can progress past the quarter finals.
Peter It’s going to be a great finish to the series, and we’ll find out on Sunday night which greyhound snares the $15,000 first prize and, more importantly, has their name etched in the honour roll and inscribed on the famous Waterloo Cup trophy.
