Social media is a powerful thing, we all know this, but it is a factor of our great sport of greyhound racing that will never cease to amaze.
And this tale is very much along those lines.
Carl Margariti from Greyhound Junkies Syndication and Nick Cutri from On The Bunny Syndication have together decided to donate a 5% share for Saturday nights race of Geelong and Sale Cup place getter Bobby The Brute to one of greyhound racing’s biggest fans – Matthew Field.
Now, Matt will be learning of this while reading this story so, first of all, congratulations Matt! Bobby The Brute, who is trained by Brendan Pursell, goes around in a 600 Grade 5 Final at The Meadows on Saturday night where there is $17,000 in prize money on offer.
Carl and Nick have never met Matt in person and know only of each other through Facebook.
“Matt is great on there (Facebook), he always wishes everyone a good morning and a good night, and it is so good to see his passion for greyhounds,” Carl Margariti said.
“Over the past few weeks there were some pretty stupid comments put on some of Matt’s Facebook posts which myself and Nick saw so we thought, how can we make this kid’s day? And a share in Bobby was it,” Margariti said.
“And if he wins on Saturday we will also get Matt a framed photo of the finish.”
Bobby The Brute is a winner of 10 races from 40 career starts and has had a near unstoppable couple of months on the track.
He ran a huge second to Simon Told Helen in the Group 2 Geelong Gold Cup and followed up his efforts with a third placing to Houdini Boy in the Group 1 Sale Cup on Boxing Day.
Since then, he competed in the Grade 5 600m heats at The Meadows where he came from last position out of the boxes to win his heat.

He now finds himself jumping from box three in race five at The Meadows.
“He went terrific in his heat last week and I feel he is on top of his game at the moment,” trainer Brendan Pursell said.
“Hopefully he can get out of the boxes a bit better than he did last week to land in front of the two dogs on his inside (My Father’s Son – box two and Drumroll Please – box one).”
“Weblec Ace (box five) is the dog to beat in the race but it is a really hot Grade 5 field.”
