The Tea Rose Stakes is a Group 2 race held at Randwick Racecourse for three-year-old fillies and is run under set weight conditions, boasting a prize pool of $300,000.
Early on its history, the Tea Rose Stakes was exclusively run at Rosehill from 1980 until 2011, with the only exception being 1991 when the race was held at Canterbury. However, since 2012 the Tea Rose Stakes has been run at Randwick.
The Tea Rose Stakes was classified as a Listed race from 1980 until 1982, before being quickly upgraded to Group 3 level for the 1983 and 1984 editions. From 1985 onwards, the Tea Rose Stakes has been run as a Group 2 contest.
The Tea Rose Stakes is the traditional lead up race for the Flight Stakes, with 19 of the last 22 winners of the Flight coming through the Tea Rose and 16 of those runners completing the Tea Rose Stakes/Flight Stakes double.
Joining the Silver Shadow Stakes, Furious Stakes and Flight Stakes, the Tea Rose Stakes is the third leg of the Princess Series during the Sydney Spring Carnival for three-year-old fillies.

Although Zougotcha ($1.95) went into the 2022 Tea Rose Stakes as the raging odds-on favourite, she was made to fight for the win by her stablemate Madame Pommery ($31). After James McDonald settled the daughter of Zoustar in the perfect position behind the leaders, the filly struggled to pick up and her stablemate went straight past her at the 200m mark. However, as Madame Pommery peaked on her run, Zougotcha got up off the canvas and kicked back underneath her to claim the victory, with Wolverine ($9) flashing down the outside to fill the placings.
-
John Sargent claimed the 2021 Tea Rose Stakes with Nash Rawiller and Four Moves Ahead ($4.80) winning one of the most open editions of the Group 2 race in sometime. Rawiller somehow navigated a path from barrier nine to find the one-one upon settling, which proved pivotal to the winners chances late. After Swift Witness ($11) took over from the slowing leader Rocklily ($81), it gave the daughter of Snitzel a clear passage to chase her down and claim the lead with 50m to go. Mallory ($4.60) didn’t get a lot of room as she ran up the rail and nabbed second from Swift Witness in the final strides.
-
The Peter & Paul Snowden-trained Dame Giselle ($2.70) has claimed the first three legs of the Princess Series, after adding her Tea Rose Stakes victory to her success in the Silver Shadow and Furious Stakes. Tommy Berry was able to settle his filly a lot closer to the speed than her main rival and race favourite Hungry Heart ($2.45), and when the favourite was fighting to get out of a pocket, the winner cruised past the leaders. Once Hungry Heart finally got out and ran on, the race was over and Dame Giselle ran through the line to win by a half-length with Vangelic ($18) another 1.25 lengths away in third.
-
The Chris Waller-trained Funstar ($3.60) has claimed a nail-biting edition of the Group 2 Tea Rose Stakes, getting her head down on the line to nab victory from the jaws of defeat. Just when it appeared as though the two race favourites, Funstar and Libertini ($1.85), were going to fight out the finish Probabeel ($15) flashed at the two late and eventually split them to finish second, relegating Libertini to third. The judge was made to work after the race, as there was only 0.2 lengths splitting the top three on the line.
