HorseBetting’s Queensland racing analyst has previewed the eight race card at Caloundra on Sunday and brings you his best bets, value bet and quaddie numbers for the afternoon. The track is rated a Good 4, but we expect a downgrade over the weekend due to thunderstorms in South-East Queensland, while the rail is out 2m for the entire course. The first race is set to jump at 12:40pm AEST.
Sunshine Coast’s Best Bet – Platinum Euros
Natalie McCall opted to scratch her talented gelding from Doomben on Saturday in preference for this race on Sunday at his home track. The five-year-old son of Eurozone has only had six starts, but he has won four of those by a combined 12 lengths and has a near-perfect record here at the Sunshine Coast, with his only defeat being a 0.1 length defeat to Garibaldi first-up last campaign. That race was over 1000m and he was very strong through the line, so if he gets a genuinely run 1200m race in this, he should be too good late. James Orman will ride the gelding 0.5kg over the allocated weight of 55.5kg which isn’t too much of a concern, however he does have to overcome barrier 13 which is a slight query. He should still be too good.
Next Best Bet – Water My Friend
Damien Batters saddles up Be Water My Friend who is first-up off a spell in a very winnable Class 2. The son of Headwater has only won once from eight starts, but in his past three starts, he has contested races won by Apache Chase, Private Eye and Glitter Strip, one of those being a Group 2. Be Water My Friend was beaten a fair way in those three starts, but any horse in this field would have been beaten even further, so we are happy to be with him. Drawn barrier two, Jake Bayliss will have this gelding in a forward position over the 1000m and have in well within striking distance in the straight. A recent trial win here should have him forward enough to be competitive fresh, while he will race without blinkers for the first time which should spark him up for the 1000m scamper.
Next Best Again At Sunshine Coast – Demurral
Not A Single Doubt gelding Demurral is having his first start for David Vandyke’s stable in what is a very intriguing transfer. Demurral was previously trained by Glenda Bell at Emerald in Central Queensland where he had some solid form, winning three straight races prior to placing behind Sizzalating at Rockhampton. The five-year-old has had one trial at the Sunshine Coast where he was not asked to do much at all over the 850m. Ryan Maloney will do the riding, which is a big push, and he has drawn perfectly in barrier four to get a run just off the speed and be hitting the line strongly off a one month freshen up. This might be harder than what he is used to, but he continues to rise to the challenge in CQ.
