Originally scheduled for Doomben, Queensland’s Wednesday metropolitan meeting has been transferred to the Sunshine Coast, with nine races set to be run on the all-weather synthetic circuit. HorseBetting brings you best bets and quaddie numbers for the meeting, with odds from Australia’s top bookmakers. Racing gets underway at 1:03pm AEST.
Best Bet at Sunshine Coast – Merimee
The eighth race of the afternoon was set to be run on Saturday at Doomben, so it is good to see Racing Queensland allow the race to be postponed to Wednesday, given it is a quality field. Merimee was a dominant 2.25-length winner at Doomben on February 5 over 1350m, while her two previous wins in September were very impressive as well, so we know she has got ability. 1400m looks to be this daughter of Winning Rupert’s pet trip, so it is pleasing to see her stay at that distance on Wednesday. Like most of her rivals, whether or not she can handle the synthetic surface is a bit of unknown, but if she does, she should be too good for her rivals. We will be keeping a close eye on Teranga, who was impressive when winning on debut at the Gold Coast albeit by a small margin. James Orman will be out the back early from barrier 13, and provided she can let down on the synthetic track, she should be picking them up strongly late.
Next Best at Sunshine Coast – Edmonton
Star Thoroughbreds had a day to remember on February 12, as the four horses they had start across the country all saluted. Merimee was one of those, and another was Edmonton, who saluted in fine style at the Gold Coast in a 1400m Maiden Plate. The Chris Waller-trained three-year-old had form around Head Legislator and Castlereagh Kid in New South Wales during the spring, so it was not surprising to see him come out and win well in his first Queensland start on the back of a nice trial. The son of Vancouver hasn’t raced on a synthetic surface in the past, so it is also an unknown, but we doubt Waller would take horses to this meeting if he didn’t think they would handle it. Luke Dittman only has two rides on Wednesday and this is the clear pick of them, so we think he can leave the Coast as a winner. From barrier three, Edmonton should get all of the favours, while the rise to 1600m is ideal.
Best Value at Sunshine Coast – Campai
In the fourth race of the day, Scott Morrisey and Stephanie Thornton combine with three-year-old filly Campai. The daughter of Spirit Of Boom has had just the three career starts, placing second on debut at the Gold Coast behind Legal Esprit in a 900m 2YO Handicap, before placing third to Hinged in a 2YO Class 1 in February 2021 as favourite – Hinged is now a Group 1 winner. Campai had almost 12 months off the scene after that run, before resuming in a 3YO Handicap at Doomben behind Enterprise Pomme and General Wolffe. Although she didn’t threaten her rivals on that occasion, she was far from disgraced in her first-up run. She won a trial on January 24 by a length at the Gold Coast, and she now races in maiden grade for the first time in her career, which is a big advantage considering she is racing well out of her class. From barrier three, Thornton will have this filly in a nice spot and she should give a sight.
