HorseBetting’s Queensland form analyst brings you his best bets and quaddie numbers from the Sunshine Coast on Sunday, August 1, on what is the first day of the 2021/22 racing season. A nice eight-race card has been put together, with the first of those set to jump at 12:32pm AEST. The track is rated a Good 4 and the rail is out 8m for the entire course.
Sunshine Coast Best Bet – Sacca
Nat McCall and James Orman combine in the opener with Sacca, a three-year-old gelding by Capitalist. This gelding has had five starts for one win and two minor placings, but arguably should have won last time out at Ipswich when luckless in the straight. His run before that at this track was solid in a much tougher race behind Miss Hipstar and now gets his chance to win again over 1200m on his home track. The son of Capitalist clearly has the best form coming into this race, and given he has drawn the inside alley, he should get every chance of winning at start six.
Next Best Bet Of The Day – Highland Son
Highland Son looked to be pretty promising early in his career, winning his first and third start at this track 12 months ago. The Stuart Kendrick-trained gelding has been out of the winner’s stall for a little while now, but his promising first-up run behind Belle’s Pluck should see him ready to win again second-up. Jaden Lloyd will do the steering from barrier two and will also take a convenient 1.5kg off the gelding’s back which will see him very competitive. Highland Son is yet to miss the placings in five starts at the Sunshine Coast and is always competitive at the 1000m, with two wins and two placings from four starts. With a good ride, he can win.
Next Best Again – Charlie Sphene
Paul Butterworth’s stable has been going very good of late, with eight of their past 50 starters winning, and two from his past two. Charlie Sphene was a dominant winner at the Gold Coast five starts ago and then an even more impressive winner at Ballina two back, winning by 4.5 lengths in all the way fashion. The son of Falvelon then went to town last time out and finished last behind Eloquently and Miami Fleiss which is not bad form at all for this 0-62 Handicap on a Sunday. Madeleine Wishart will take her mount forward from the outside alley, and given that the gelding is very fit, he could prove hard to catch.
