A competitive eight-race program is set down for decision at Sale Racecourse on Sunday afternoon. Despite the track being rated a Soft 6 at the time of acceptances, a clear forecast means we should be racing on a Soft 5 or potentially even a Good 4. The day of racing is set to start at 11:45am AEST, with the rail out 3m the entire circuit.
Best Bet at Sale: Mathew
The Patrick Payne-trained Mathew missed by the barest of margins at Sandown on July 12, and the step back to the country scene should benefit him. The four-year-old looks to be a progressive stayer, and despite needing to lug 61.5kg, he should be a class above this moderate field. The Tavistock gelding is fourth-up this campaign and so will be rock-hard fit for this assignment. All he needs to do is replicate his finishing burst from Sandown, and he should prove too good in the second leg of the quaddie.

Next Best at Sale: Miss Take
This three-year-old filly finished second on her Australian debut, beaten under a length at Geelong on June 30. That effort was on a Heavy 8 first-up from a nine-month spell, so she is only going to improve with that run under her belt. Having led the field up, the filly was headed with 200m to go, but didn’t shirk the task to suggest she was worth following at her next start. Sale is conducive to on-pace runners on firming surfaces, so look for Blake Shinn to lead the field up over the 1205m. With an uncontested lead expected, Miss Take will take a power of beating.

Best Value at Sale: Piccolo Fiore
Adam Hanley’s Piccolo Fiore has returned a different galloper this campaign, with a second to the progressive Dunalley before a smart BM58 win at Sale on July 7. That win came over the 1717m, and the return to the track and trip in an open 0-64 should help. Barrier 14 is offset by the fact she wants to settle close to the speed, and if Sally Wynne can have the Fiorente mare outside the leader or in the one-one, Piccolo Fiore will get not better chance of bring up a second-straight win for the first time in her career.
Best Value
Race 5 – #13 Piccolo Fiore (14)
5yo Mare | T: Adam Hanley | J: Sally Wynne (57kg)
