Mike Moroney admits the 1000-metre dash around Moonee Valley for Saturday’s Listed Carylon Stakes may be a tad sharp for Group Three-winning sprinter Snapper but says the now six-year-old is ready to make an impact this spring.
Four of Snapper’s six wins have come at The Valley but none of those victories have come at a distance shorter than six furlongs.
“The distance will be the question with him, but he is going well,” Moroney said.
“For a horse of his age he’s fairly lightly raced so that’s on our side too.”
Snapper jumped and led a Flemington jumpout last Friday over 800m and was pleasing according to Moroney.
Jye McNeil will ride, with the pair to jump from barrier one in the Carlyon Stakes and Sportsbet has Snapper as a $19 outsider in the nine-horse field.
The Gr.2 Bobbie Lewis Quality (1200m) is next on the radar for Snapper, who poses a solid record down the Flemington straight having won the Gr.3 Standish Handicap (1200m) in January this year.
