Tony Gollan and Ryan Maloney have combined with Skirt The Law to take out the $2 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic, with both Gollan and Maloney recording their first win in the Gold Coast feature race.
The race played out perfectly for the Better Than Ready filly, as she jumped out of the barrier nicely from barrier two and sat in behind the leaders who set a genuine tempo.
Maloney just needed some luck and a gap to appear, and when it did he pushed the button and his filly booted clear.
Skirt The Law officially won by 1.5 lengths over the fast-finishing Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott duo Platinum Jubilee and Summer Loving who filled the placings.
After being backed into favouritism before last Saturday’s attempt at running the Magic Millions, she ended up drifting back out to $7 with online bookmakers, going out as an equal-third favourite with Platinum Jubilee, who in turn ended up running the quinella.
Magic Millions 2YO Classic Replay – Skirt The Law
Tony Gollan spoke post-race after his maiden Magic Millions 2YO Classic victory about how he had some pre-race worries after having such a long break between runs for his filly.
“We sorta had to chance our filly a bit, we knew we had a long time between runs, even though we had that barrier trial,” Gollan explained.
“Boy, she was better than ever!
“It’s just been an amazing journey with this filly and the ladies group chat started lighting up after her first win and they were daring to be here on this day.
“I really wanted to win this race. It’s one of the best races in Queensland.”
Ryan Maloney was ecstatic after the win, calling it redemption for his defeat on Isotope a few years back.
Maloney had quite the opposite view to Gollan in regards to Skirt The Law missing the run and having a lengthy break.
“Tony’s (Gollan) done an enormous job with her, I was never concerned when she missed that run,” Maloney said.
“She’s so professional for a filly that hasn’t done quite a lot and obviously it’s her first prep.
“She doesn’t have to lead, like I said, and once I found the back of Gai’s (Royal Entrance) and the horse Brad Widdup’s (Fire Lane), I just needed an out.
“Once Miss Coota dropped off and I was able to get that run, she just put them to sword and showed them what she’s got.”
