Recent runnings of the Sir John Monash Stakes:
-
The Peter Moody-trained Sigh continued her impressive preparation when claiming the 2023 Sir John Monash Stakes at Caulfield under Carleen Hefel. Having been scratched from the Listed Vic Sprint Series final at Flemington the week prior, the four-year-old mare relished the extra week between runs to claim her first black-type success at start nine. There was speed aplenty with Malkovich initially leading the field up, before Katsu took on the classy sprinter for the lead and tried to run away approaching the home turn. As a majority of the field opted to head for the middle of the track, Carleen Hefel and Sigh ($7) stuck closer towards the rail and booted to the lead with 250m to go. Mileva ($8.50), who claim the 2022 edition of the race emerged from the pack and loomed as a serious threat to Sigh with 100m to go. However, Hefel managed to get every bit of effort out of Sigh to go on to claim her first Group 3 as a jockey in a tight finish, with General Beau ($7) a length away in third.
-
Much of the post-race talk focused on $2.80 favourite Oxley Road running out of puff on the straight. But no one can discredit the performance of Mileva in taking out the Sir John Monash Stakes at Caulfield. The four-year-old mare, with Daniel Moor aboard, was brave inside the final 100m in the 1100m sprint worth $200,000. She notched up her third victory for Phillip Stokes in six starts thanks to Daniel Moor who judged his ride to perfection late in the race, going on to edge out Bless Her for Clayton Douglas.
-
Red Can Man, a sprinter hailing from Western Australia, bounced back from a lackluster debut in Melbourne to capture Saturday’s 2021 Group 3 Sir John Monash Stakes (1100m) at Caulfield. Having won seven of his 18 starts in Perth, Red Can Man transitioned to trainer David Brideoake’s stable at Mornington for a Victorian campaign. Despite a disappointing initial outing at Flemington on June 19, where he failed to place down the straight, the son of Gingerbread Man showed promise with a strong trial at Traralgon. Returning to firmer footing and around a turn, Red Can Man showcased his best form, thriving on the Good 4 surface at Caulfield despite the cold conditions. The Sir John Monash Stakes evolved into a thrilling speed duel primarily between Red Can Man and Sydney’s three-year-old Malkovich. Ultimately, Red Can Man prevailed in the final 50 metres, clinching victory by a neck in the $160,000 contest.

Trainer Mick Bell says he is in awe of stable star Jungle Edge after the sprinter revelled in the heavy conditions to win the 2020 Sir John Monash Stakes at Caulfield. In holding off the Godolphin-owned Viridine, Jungle Edge landed a sizeable betting move to run the $2.60 favourite in registering a three-quarter length victory. The Group Three win in the 1100m sprint avenged Jungle Edge’s narrow defeat at the hands of Oak Door in 2019. And the success provided Jade Darose her second stakes race win aboard Jungle Edge after taking out the WJ Adams Stakes at Caulfield in February. Due to COVID-19 restrictions placed on jockeys, Darose was unable to travel to Adelaide when Jungle Edge won the DC McKay Stakes at Morphettville in May. Darose was Jungle Edge’s regular trackwork partner since Bell took over the training of the rising 10-year-old five years prior, but the WJ Adams Stakes victory was her first race ride on the gelding.
