The 2022 Silver Eagle raceday at Royal Randwick has been postponed to Everest Day this Saturday. A full field of 14 horses and four emergencies have accepted for the $1 million race over 1300m.
The Silver Eagle is the traditional lead up and qualifier for the Golden Eagle over 1500m, with first three horses over the line in Saturday’s race earning ballot exemption for the $10 million feature on October 29 at Rosehill Gardens.
Online Bookmakers have opened the Silver Eagle market with the Hawkes team-trained Mr Mozart as a $3.70 favourite, with Startantes on the second line of betting at $5. On the third and fourth lines of betting we have two of the four Chris Waller-trained horses – Espiona at $6.50 and Waterford at $7.50. However, the winning hopes don’t end there, with Kiss Sum ($13) and Loch Eagle ($11) having decent chances from good barriers.
The speed map for the Silver Eagle should see Mr Mozart lead from barrier one. Loch Eagle and Startantes could take up more prominent positions than normal, considering they have inside barriers. The back markers should feature the likes of Waterford, Espiona, Kiss Sum and Brigantine are all expected to settle at the rear or worse than midfield and be flying home late, to set this up as one of the more intriguing Silver Eagles to be run since its conception.

The Chris Waller-trained Waterford is currently unbeaten in Australia from three starts, after he was sent over from Tom Ward in England after having only one run at Newbury in July of 2021. This son of Awtaad is the new boom-horse on the scene in Sydney racing as he has won all three of his races in a variety of conditions, varying from a Good 4 to a Heavy 8. Waterford will be jumping from barrier 18, but that shouldn’t be a problem as we know he will go back from the draw and be running home late. The $7.50 odds look juicy.
Mr Mozart is the early market favourite at $4.40, which isn’t much of a surprise as the Hawkes-trained horse ran second, at his first-up run, in the Group 2 Theo Marks Stakes over 1300m on September 10. This son of Snitzel is unbeaten on Soft or Heavy ground, recording one win on Soft and two wins on Heavy. This guy has been competing in Group 2 and Group 3 company at his last eight starts, recording three wins and two minor placings. This gelding will be hard to beat, and the $3.70 will most likely shorten before jump-time if the track plays favourable to leaders.
Loch Eagle and Kiss Sum both have chances at bigger odds. The Kris Lees-trained Loch Eagle will be midfield from barrier five and most likely lob in the one-one. Meanwhile, the Tracey Bartley-trained Kiss Sum will receive a great run from barrier six where Kerrin McEvoy can choose whether he wants to sit midfield or out the back.
