Punt Drunk – 18th January 2021
Monday, you sneak up on us like a dinner with the in-laws we’ve been avoiding for some time. You continually rock up after such a good weekend and remind us that there’s more to life than beers, Parma’s and bets. Which is a shame because we love all three of those things. Alas, we continue on! The Magic Millions have been and gone and what a week it was with the Sales eclipsing some absurd figures and the racing that followed on Saturday was as mesmerising as ever!
We need a MC like Terry!

Seriously, how bloody good is Terry McAuliffe? Keen watchers of the Racing.com coverage of Murray Bridge noticed the former SA called away from his normal mounting yard duties without much of an explanation. Footage has emerged over the past 24 hours of what he was actually doing! MC’ing a wedding and didn’t he do it in style? Apparently the groomsmen had a Quaddie going at Ascot and were still alive coming into the last leg. The boy’s got a microphone in Terry Mac’s hands and got him to call it off the big screen! Unfortunately for the chaps, things didn’t go to plan and they were knocked out of the quaddie despite some of Terry’s best work! Got to love the punt hey?
Time for a Slipper!
IT’S WALLER.
IT’S BOWMAN.
IT’S SHAQUERO IN THE MAGIC MILLIONS 2YO CLASSIC.#TABMagicMillions | @tabcomau pic.twitter.com/D6DzoRJtlP

Chris Waller was quickly on the front foot (unlike the top order of the Australian cricket team) and suggested that both Shaquero and She’s All Class head to the Golden Slipper in March. Waller was convinced that it was the barrier that cost She’s All Class a win in the 2YO Classic on Saturday, and that’s without saying how good the eventual winner Shaquero was. Shaquero is currently a $17 chance in the slipper whilst the stablemate She’s All Class is at odds of $21 for the prestigious race. We all know where our allegiance lies with the Golden Slipper though, our girl Enthaar!
Just to add salt to the wounds
Is there anything worse than “could have” or “should have” conversations? Well Ryan Maloney has come out and said that if his mount Isotope in the 3YO Guineas didn’t fall when cornering in the featured event he would have gone on to win! Now, not taking anything away from Maloney’s expertise but we could have been the man who picked the lotto numbers if we got up off our ass to put it on! We understand that there was plenty of interest around his mount, but when there’s 400m left in a race and a capacity field there’s no such thing as a sure thing. Remember Winx in the Turnbull and she had no chance with 200m to go? Exactly our point.
