What Chevalier Cup Day 2022
Where Sha Tin Racecourse – Hong Kong
When Sunday, November 27, 2022
First Race 12:45pm HKT / 3:45pm AEDT

We’re heading abroad for Hong Kong racing on Sunday afternoon with a 10-race program from Sha Tin Racecourse. The Class 1 Chevalier Cup is the feature race over the 1600m; However, we’ve got plenty of quality undercard racing as well, with some key runners amid their preparation with eyes firmly set for Hong Kong International Races on December 11.

The track is rated as Good for race-day but we’re expecting some scattered showers throughout the weekend, so it’s possible we get a slight downgrade for racing set to get underway at 12:45pm HKT.

Chevalier Cup: Keefy

We’ve landed with Keefy in the Chevalier Cup on Sunday afternoon when making his first tilt into Class 1 company. His effort last start behind race rival Beautyverse was sensational when getting the back of the eventual winner and was the only horse making up ground from off the speed to be beaten by a nose on the line. Beautyverse was strong to the line as well making his own luck, but with the step up in class and a significant weight advantage to Keefy, we expect this race to pan out in very similar fashion. Watch for Derek Leung to get the back of Beautyverse again, but this time being 2.5kgs better for the step up in class should mean Keefy can get the better of them here. The Frankie Lor-trained gelding by All Too Hard deserves his win this preparation and we think this contest third-up looks perfect.

Sha Tin Best Bet: Sweet Encounter

Sweet Encounter is trained by the John Size camp and should really be looking to make it four wins on the trot this preparation when competing in race-eight on the program. After bombing the start completely at this track and distance on November 12 this son of Toronado had the audacity to pick itself up and power to the line to be beaten by 1.3 lengths to Stunning Impact. Prior to that he’d gone two starts for two wins, first up over 1200m and then went on to score again when stepping up to 1400m. The blessing in disguise for this guy was his ability to be versatile in running with both victories he’d elected to lead, but after what happened last start, it was nice to see him come from off the pace to run boldly. The best Jockey in Hong Kong Zac Purton takes the reins here now which is only a positive and will look to park just in behind the speed to show off Sweet Encounter’s blistering turn-of-foot late to win. He looks very hard to beat here and we’re keen to be with him on Sunday afternoon at Sha Tin.

Next Best at Sha Tin: Beauty Eternal

Race nine at Sha Tin looks a match race between two horses on paper between Superb Capitalist and our on top pick Beauty Eternal. While we were impressed with the first-up effort of Superb Capitalist smashing the clock at 1:08:42 for the 1200m in Class 4 company, we think Beauty Eternal has some class of his own and looks the one to beat out of the pair for us. If you haven’t seen the replay, we strongly urge you not to watch his last start performance as it is grim viewing when beaten 0.3 lengths by Science Patch. He found nothing but trouble and backsides turning for home in that race and simply should’ve won in a canter with another luck in transit, to the eye he looks a special talent and if anything, barrier 10 on Sunday looks ideal. Zac Purton won’t make the same mistake twice and keep this son of Starspangledbanner out of trouble even if that means being wide without cover as he was in his first-up victory. Superb Capitalist will lead and look the winner a long way out but looks for Beauty Eternal to be screaming down the middle of the track late to salute nicely in the penultimate race on the card.

Sha Tin Value Bet: Ching

We’re siding with Ching in the sixth race on the Sha Tin program after another forgivable performance when first-up on November 6. He drew barrier 14 on that occasion and just got way too far out of his ground when running into second behind Young Victory. This looks a very competitive race on paper so hopefully we’ll be getting a good price for this gelding by Frosted as the likes of One Voice, Speed Fay Fay and El Jefe all deserve respect. After drawing that horrid gate things should be much smoother on Sunday afternoon with barrier one looking ideal for jockey Luke Currie to get on the back of what looks a solid speed on the map. If he can reproduce his first-up effort after sitting closer he looks a cracking bet with online bookmakers.
