Hong Kong racing is back at Sha Tin on Sunday afternoon for a competitive 11-race program. Two of which are at Group 2 level, as The Chairman’s Trophy (1600m) and The Sprint Cup (1200m) headline an impressive card. The rail is in the B+2 position and with picturesque conditions leading into Sunday, it should be a fair day of racing. The first race is set to get underway at 12:30pm HKT (2:30pm AEST).
The Chairman’s Trophy Top Tip: California Spangle
We don’t expect to be getting a big price for California Spangle; however, he clearly goes on top in the Group 2 Chairman’s Trophy. He was outsprinted over the 1400m by Lucky Sweynesse on March 19 but still battled into second position in The Queen’s Silver Jubilee Cup. He’s gets back to his favoured 1600m trip that saw him take out the Group 1 Hong Kong Mile and should simply be too strong for his rivals. There’s no Lucky Sweynesse or Golden Sixty to spoil the party and although you’ll be taking a short quote for this son of Starspangledbanner, California Spangle should be winning. Our suggestion is to Multi it with our top pick in The Sprint Cup a race prior.

The Sprint Cup Top Tip: Lucky Sweynesse
Lucky Sweynesse is starting to stamp himself as the best sprinter in Hong Kong and looks hard to beat again on Sunday. He took at The Queen’s Silver Jubilee over 1400m which most thought would see him out; however, he was too strong and scored nicely despite running into California Spangle. He heads back to the 1200m which is his ideal track and trip seeing him win the Group 1 Centenary Sprint Cup on February 5, smashing the clock in the process. Zac Purton hops back aboard and will be looking to take luck out of the equation in this small field, cutting across to lead before bolting clear. Lucky Sweynesse into California Spangle seems to be the likely play of the day.

Best Bet at Sha Tin: Red Elegance
Red Elegance has been trialling the house down in Hong Kong for the Jamie Richards yard and looks set to make a strong race-day impression on debut. He’s won his last two jump-outs, one of them down the Sha Tin straight which he sees on Sunday afternoon. Zac Purton takes the reins on this son of Toronado and although there is some risk involved taking a debutant down the Sha Tin straight, Red Elegance has proven enough at the trials that he should handle the occasion. He draws barrier seven on Sunday and with plenty of speed engaged, Red Elegance should get his chance to stamp some authority on his Class 4 rivals.
