The Hillside circuit at Sandown will play host to a nine-race card on Wednesday, with online bookmakers’ early markets already creating plenty of interest. The rail is true and we are expecting to race on a Soft 5 at worst, but with warmer days ahead, an upgrade may occur. The two-year-old fillies kick things off at 2:30pm AEDT with five first-time starters engaged, while the three-year-olds will run 1800m in the last.
Best Best at Sandown: SEGUSO
Logan McNeil claims 3kg on the Grahame Begg-trained Seguso, bringing the weight down to 58.5kg for the 1300m event in race 3. The gelding has had a 25-day let up after running second at Pakenham last time out when backed into $2.10 late. He has only had one try on a Soft 5 track for a second-placing, but we are counting on a track upgrade here for our best bet of the day. Seguso’s last try at 1300m was at the Sandown Lakeside, where he finished third, again after being backed in late. We are expecting him to settle fourth in the run – one out, one back – and be strong to the line down the long home straight.
Next Best at Sandown: OCEAN’S JEN
Ocean’s Jen in the last race can continue her solid form after four good runs since her spell. It was her first run at this track three weeks ago when second, and with that experience we think she can go one better here. With John Allen on board and being from the in-form Maher & Eustace stable, we are predicting Ocean’s Jen to settle a little worse than midfield and look for inside runs up the home straight.
Best Value at Sandown: NORTHERN MELODY
Three-year-old filly Northern Melody has not won this campaign but has been knocking on the door having placed in her last three outings. From barrier three she can position up third behind the leader and be patient in the run. Damien Lane sticks with her for the third run in succession and he knows this horse well. With the miles in the legs, she just might get the last crack at them. She has won on rain-affected ground before and was third on a Soft 5 last start when beaten three lengths, so the conditions won’t be an issue if they stay that way.
