Twilight racing will hit Victoria on Wednesday with Sandown Lakeside set to host an eight race card packed full of competitive types. With the track coming up a Good 4 and with the rail true the entire circuit we look set for a cracking day of mid-week racing. In previous meetings the cutaway rail has been in place which resulted in plenty of advantages to on pace gallopers, however with the rail back in the true, every runner should get their chance if they are good enough. The first at Sandown is set to jump at 3:40pm AEDT.
Best Bet: Race 3 #4 Setanta
The Maher and Eustace-trained Setanta made his stable debut at Warrnambool on December 31, and the early indications are he enjoys the Victorian way of running, after beginning his career in NSW. He broke his maiden in fine style when scoring three lengths in a dominant display, despite getting little to no favours in the running. He was trapped three wide with no cover just off the leaders, yet put pain to a large field. When taking the lead at the 200m mark plenty of runners would have been vulnerable for the taking but Setanta kicked clear and showed he has plenty of ability. The step up to a Class 1 shouldn’t concern punters because he looks the part, and the stable may have a Listed/Group race in mind with him throughout the Autumn Carnival. He can use this as a stepping stone, and he has what it takes to salute as our best bet on the Sandown card.
Next Best: Race 8 #8 Goolagong Rose
Having won over the track and distance on January 6, we’re hoping a similar result is on the card for the Tony McEvoy-trained Goolagong Rose in the final leg of the Sandown quaddie. Goolagong Rose is a galloper who looks to settle in the first half a dozen and from barrier eight, Damien Thornton will be needing a touch of luck early on to find a spot in the running. She maps to get a cart across the field with speed drawn to her outside, and with a genuine tempo expected her race fitness and experience over the Lakeside 1300m could prove pivotal in the final race of the Sandown card.
