Sandown Racecourse will play host to another Wednesday metropolitan meeting this week, with a very competitive eight-race card scheduled on the Lakeside course. The track is currently rated a Soft 5, but with very little rain on the forecast, we expect to be racing on a perfect Good 4 surface for the whole program. The rail will be in the +9m position, with the opening event set to kick off at 1pm AEST.
Best Bet at Sandown: Bews
Bews returned from a nine-month spell with a dominant three-length victory over Mainmanray at this track and trip on August 6. Mainmanray has since franked the form with a win at Cranbourne last weekend. Although this son of I Am Invincible struggled last spring, it is clear Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr have a high opinion of him. Considering that he ran in the Group 3 Blue Sapphire Stakes and Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes, and is now going through the grades in mid-week races, we expect Bews to keep his unbeaten streak alive for this preparation.

Next Best at Sandown: Poison Chalice
Poison Chalice was sent around as the race favourite first-up at Geelong on July 30, and even though there were some hairy moments in the final 300m, the Paul Preusker-trained galloper burst through a gap late to run away with an impressive one-length victory. This four-year-old gelding has only been to the races three times, with his last-start success breaking his maiden status. It is rare to see a runner go from a maiden to benchmark grade at their next start and win, but this son of Savabeel won dominantly. Declan Bates will retain the ride, and if he can peel off the leader’s back late, Poison Chalice should prove too classy for his rivals.

Best Value at Sandown: Vadaboy
Vadaboy defeated all bar Fire Glo Too last start over 2100m at this track after he settled on the back of a tearaway leader. To this guy’s credit, he battled all the way until the line but couldn’t go with the winner in the final strides. Now that this five-year-old gelding has had three runs and is stepping up to 2400m, he should be at peak fitness and be ready to show his best. Craig Williams will take the reins again, and if he can find the one-one on the back of the speed, we expect Vadaboy to play a prominent role in the finish.

Race 5 – #7 Vadaboy (7)
5yo Gelding | T: Simon Zahra | J: Craig Williams (59.5kg)
