What Grand National Hurdle Day 2022
Where Ladbrokes Park – 591-659 Princes Hwy, Springvale VIC 3171
When Sunday, August 7, 2022
First Race 12:30pm AEST

It is Grand National Hurdle Day on Sunday as racing heads to the Lakeside track at Sandown for an eight-race program. Three of the eight events are set to be run over the jumps, with the featured Grand National Hurdle opening the quaddie in race five. Despite the rain in the area, the track has come up a Soft 5, with the rail returning to the true position for Sunday’s meeting. Action gets under way at Sandown at 12:30pm with the Crisp Steeplechase.

Grand National Hurdle Top Tip: The Cossack

He is a superstar jumper in New Zealand and we are hoping the Paul Nelson-trained The Cossack can bring that form across the Tasman and take out the Grand National Hurdle. The nine-year-old gelding has won seven of his last eight races, with his sole defeat in that time coming in a 2200m event on the flat. He is the definition of a perfect jumper and with a Sandown track destined to be rain-affected and a bit tired, it is going to suit this bloke down to the ground. With 12 of his 13 career wins coming on wet going and the fact he has already won twice this campaign with 70+kg on his back suggests he is the one to beat. Despite Saunter Boy being the favourite with online bookmakers, The Cossack looks to be the superior jumper and stayer in the field and with three wins from as many starts at the 4200m, we expect the Kiwi will keep his record intact with a barnstorming victory in the Grand National Hurdle.

Best Bet at Sandown: River Ribble

The Anthony & Sam Freedman-trained River Ribble was defeated under a length by the in-form Thron Bone at Caulfield on July 23, having gone into that race on the back of a devastating maiden win the start prior at Cranbourne. The now three-year-old colt looks to have bought the best form lines into a race like this and despite needing to lug 60.5kg compared to some of his rivals, he is the clear best bet of the day. From barrier seven, we anticipate Mark Zahra will have this bloke settled just off the leader’s heels throughout and should be able to stalk race favourite Grand Impact wherever he goes. With a strong turn of foot and impressive form lines to his name, River Ribble should have no issue in bringing up a second win from three starts this campaign.

Best Value at Sandown: Adelabelle

We were with the Maddie Raymond-trained Adeleabelle when she smashed her rivals by nine-lengths at Warrnambool on July 18 and showed she may be one to follow on wet tracks. That was just her second start for Raymond having come over from New Zealand and if we get similarly wet conditions like she got at the ‘Bool, then Adelabelle presents great value with online betting sites. Look for Damian Lane to have her settled in the second half of the field and with a genuinely run 2100m event expected, Frosty will have her building through the gears approaching the home turn. Armed with a strong finishing sprint, Adelabelle should prove too hard to hold out in the second leg of the quaddie.
