Racing returns to the Lakeside track at Sandown on Wednesday for another eight-race metropolitan meeting, and HorseBetting’s Victorian form expert presents his best bets and free quaddie picks for the afternoon. The track is rated a Good 4, the rail returns to the true position, and racing is set to commence at 3:40pm AEDT.
Sandown Best Bet – Gate Crash
Our best bet of the day comes up in the second leg of the quaddie as the Patrick Payne-trained Gate Crash looks to bring up consecutive wins for the first time in his career. The four-year-old son of Roc De Cambes finished over the top of his rivals at the Sandown 1800m last time out and looks well-placed at his first go at 2100m. He was pulling away from his rivals over 1800m, so the 2100m should be no detriment to his winning chances. Alana Kelly hops on board and her 2kg claim gets them in with just 59.5kg, which should only help. From barrier seven, we expect to see Gate Crash settle in the second half of the field before ruining the party for the leaders.
Next Best Bet at Sandown – Annunciate
The Chris Hyland-trained Annunciate is the definition of a bridesmaid so far this campaign, with four runner-up performances from five runs this time in. The seven-year-old son of All Too Hard was last seen finishing second to Algiers on January 3 over 2400m on the Hillside track. Two runs back, he finished within a length of subsequent Bagot Handicap winner Tigertiger, and that form looks more than good enough in this BM64 affair. From barrier four, Josh Richards will look to use his 2kg claim to his advantage and have Annunciate settled up on speed or just off the leaders’ heels. If he runs to the form he has shown so far this campaign, then the veteran should prove too good for this lot.
Best Value at Sandown – Eluding
We were with the Tony & Calvin McEvoy-trained Eluding at Flemington last Saturday when he was ultimately scratched and saved for another day. That day is seemingly Wednesday, and he looks well-placed to claim a third win from five starts this campaign. The five-year-old son of Toronado was last seen finishing an unlucky eighth at Caulfield in a BM78 on December 26 when 3.4 lengths off Excelida. He ran into plenty of traffic that day but looked like he deserved to finish closer. He is jumping from barrier seven this time around, and we anticipate Madison Lloyd will be looking to settle him within the first four. With Lloyd’s 3kg claim and decent enough form behind him, Eluding looks a great bet at around $5 with the top online bookmakers.
