What Sandown Lakeside Races
Where Sandown Racecourse – 591-659 Princes Hwy, Springvale VIC 3171
When Wednesday, November 16, 2022
First Race 1pm AEDT

Wednesday metropolitan racing returns to Sandown Racecourse on the Lakeside track this week with a very competitive eight-race program. The track is currently rated a Soft 6, and with a fair bit of rain forecasted for Monday and Tuesday, we don’t expect to see the track get out of the Soft range on raceday. The rail will be in the true position for the entire circuit, while racing kicks off at 1pm AEDT.

SANDOWN BEST BET: The Unicorn

In the second race of the day over 1400m, the Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained The Unicorn looks awfully hard to beat, after she destroyed her rivals over 1200m last start to break her maiden at Mornington. This three-year-old filly was heavily backed at her most recent start, with punters happy to dive in at the odds-on quote, and she didn’t let them down, winning by 3.5 lengths as the $1.45 favourite. This daughter of Choisir lead the eight-horse field from barrier to winning post, while Craig Newitt didn’t even have to go for the whip and he throttled her down just before the winning post, showing everyone that this girl has a lot of ability. We aren’t getting a spoil with the $1.85 opening price with online bookmakers, but if she jumps quickly from the barriers like she did last start, she will be very hard to beat and should be recording her second win in a row.

Best Bet

Race 5 – silks#2 The Unicorn (6)

NEXT BEST AT SANDOWN: Bazini

Our next best bet will be the Simon Wilde-trained Bazini, who ran very well first-up over 2040m at Moonee Valley and will be much fitter for his second-up run. This five-year-old gelding has an impressive undefeated record second-up with two wins from as many starts. This son of Dundeel has won over 2000m, 2200m, 3000m and 3600m, so there is no doubt that he will stay and run out the 2500m, so if we do get rain affected ground it should only benefit him. At his most recent start at Moonee Valley, it seemed as though he struggled to sprint on the home turn, so with a longer straight at Sandown, we should see the best of this guy running over the top of the leaders late.

Next Best

Race 4 – silks#2 Bazini (9)

5yo Gelding | T: Simon Wilde | J: Josh Cartwright (60.5kg)

$4.60 with Neds

SANDOWN VALUE BET: Johandough

In race five over 2100m we will be siding with the Thomas Carberry-trained Johandough, who will be looking for a return to the winners circle at Sandown, where she has only missed the placings once in her career from four starts. After returning from an 11 month spell two starts back, this six-year-old mare should be much fitter for her two runs back. This daughter of Turffontein hasn’t won since March of 2021, where she won at this track and trip, so hopefully on Wednesday she can return to the winners circle at her first visit to Sandown Lakeside since that last win.

Best Value

Race 5 – silks#9 Johandough (4)

6yo Mare | T: Thomas Carberry | J: Daniel Stackhouse (59.5kg)

$27 with Unibet
