Sandown will host a very competitive eight-race twilight meeting on the Lakeside course this Wednesday afternoon. The track is currently rated a Soft 5, but with very little rain expected in the Sandown area on Tuesday and Wednesday, we should be racing on a perfect Good 4 surface throughout. The rail will be in the +6m position for the entire circuit, while racing is scheduled to commence at 3:05pm AEDT.
Best Bet at Sandown: Belmia
The fourth race of the day will be a Benchmark 64 Handicap over 1300m featuring the Jamie Edwards-trained Belmia, who finished third when first-up on the Hillside track on February 4. This three-year-old filly finished 3.75 lengths behind Benedetta on that day, who has since gone on to win the Inglis Sprint at Flemington last weekend. This daughter of Bel Esprit had a very similar run to the eventual winner when fresh last start, but as they rounded the home turn, Craig Williams chose to go back to the inside and ride for luck, whereas the winner went to the outside and got a clear run to the finish. Williams will be disappointed with his decision, as this filly was held up until the final 200m in behind slowing runners before getting out late and finishing third. Williams should be able to settle behind the leaders in the one-one from barrier two on Wednesday and make his move to the outside on the home turn, giving this girl every chance to return to the winner’s circle.

Next Best at Sandown: Proscenium Arch
The Trent Busuttin & Natalie Young-trained Proscenium Arch drops back from the Group 3 Vanity Stakes at Flemington first-up on February 18 to a Class 1 this Wednesday. When having her first-up run in the Vanity Stakes, this three-year-old filly was forced to work from the outside barrier to lead the field at a steady tempo to the home bend before fading to finish ninth of 10. This daughter of So You Think will have benefited greatly from her hard run when fresh, and now that she is racing in an easier race and dropping back in distance from 1400m to 1300m, this appears to be set up perfectly for her. Blake Shinn will stick on Wednesday, and if this girl can get to the front from a better barrier (5), she should look to up the ante going around the home turn and prove too classy for this field.

Best Value at Sandown: Awol
Awol from the Ciaron Maher & David Eustace yard will be looking to go one better on Wednesday, when he takes on the Benchmark 64 Handicap over 1500m, after finishing runner-up and losing by the barest of margins at Ballarat last start on February 19. This three-year-old gelding is still in his first racing preparation, but he shows no signs of slowing down, given that he was strong through the line at the end of the 1400m last start. Since breaking his maiden on January 8 at Warrnambool, this son of Sweynesse has been consistent without winning in Benchmark 64 grade, finishing fifth at Pakenham two starts ago and a close second at his most recent start. John Allen has ridden this gelding in all four of his career races, and he will do so again on Wednesday as he attempts to win his second race at start number five. Allen should be positive again from barrier three and try to settle in the first four off the fence, hoping to reverse the bad luck he had last start on the inside of horses. If he gets even luck, this gelding should run well at reasonable odds with online bookmakers.
