Victorian mid-week metropolitan racing will once again return to the Sandown Lakeside course, where it will host a very competitive eight-race program. The Sandown track is currently rated a Good 4 and with warm weather forecast for Victoria over the next week, we don’t expect to see anything but a firm surface on race day. The rail will out in the +6m position for the entire circuit, when racing gets underway at 3:40pm AEDT. Here are our free Sandown tips for January 11, 2023.
Best Bet at Sandown: Hard Squeeze
Our best of the day will be Hard Squeeze from the Robbie Griffiths & Mathew de Kock yard who is coming off a fast finishing fourth behind Chandon Burj, going down by 1.1 lengths on the line at the end of the 1800m event on the Sandown Hillside track on Boxing Day. If you were watching this five-year-old mare at her most recent start, you would have seen that she settled last on the fence and as the field rounded the home bend, she had to wait to make her move to the outside. During this time she wasn’t even in the picture on the broadcast, but over the last 200m, you saw her lengthen and make up a bunch of ground to finish in a photo with the third horse. Now that this daughter of All Too Hard and Exsqueeze Me is third-up and gets to 2100m, a distance that she has won at twice from four attempts, this Benchmark 64 Handicap looks to be her race on Wednesday. Carleen Hefel will take the ride, and with the aid of her 2kg claim and barrier one, we should see her settle towards the back of the field and look to finish off strong once again.

Next Best at Sandown: Girl
In the penultimate event of the day, we will be siding with the Leon & Troy Corstens-trained Girl, who was outclassed in a Benchmark 70 Handicap last start on the Sandown Hillside track on December 10. This three-year-old filly will drop back to her own sex and to a Benchmark 64 Handicap over 1200m on Wednesday, which should suit her a lot better than her most recent start over 1400m in a tougher grade. This daughter of Zoustar has had a month between runs at her last three starts and it seems to suit her, so don’t be worried abut the time off since her last run in early December. John Allen will jump back aboard this filly for her fourth career start after he rode her to victory at her only win two starts back at Bendigo. From barrier two, she shouldn’t have to do too much work to hold a prominent position just behind the speed and if she gets even luck in the final 200m, she should prove too strong in the concluding stages.

Best Value at Sandown: Hurricane Ketut
In the Maiden Plate over 1400m, we will be siding with Hurricane Ketut from the Matthew Brown yard, who is coming off a third-place finish at Cranbourne over 1300m last start on December 29. This son of Toronado has been working up to a win over his last two starts and the booking of Damien Oliver on Wednesday, indicates intent and that he may be ready to win. From barrier six, we should see Oliver push forward to try and hold the one-one position just behind the leaders, and if he can do that without doing too much work, this gelding will get every chance to break his maiden at start number five. Hurricane Ketut is paying a juicy $16 with horse betting sites, which we believe is well worth a nibble.
