Metropolitan racing in Victoria heads to the Sandown Hillside track on Wednesday afternoon for a small, albeit competitive, seven-race card. This will be the first meeting on the outer track since the beginning of August, so with a bit of luck it is in much better condition since last we raced. Despite the Soft 6 track, the ground should be in the best shape possible, and even with the rail being out 9m for the entire circuit, we expect every runner to get their chance if good enough. The first race of the day is set to jump at 1:35pm AEST.
SANDOWN BEST BET: Waltz On By
If you, like us, were with the Peter Moody-trained Waltz On By in the Quezette Stakes last time out, it was a horror watch. The three-year-old filly gained no luck in the home straight and continually found backsides when looking to make her run. We expect the drop back in grade to a midweek BM64 to be the tonic for her maiden success. This is, by far, her easiest assignment to date, and considering she has not been beaten far in a Blue Diamond Stakes and several other races at Group 3 or Listed level in her four starts, she looks to be a class above this lot. From barrier five, look for Luke Nolen to have this girl settled better than midfield in the moving line. With clear air and even luck in running, we expect Waltz On By to prove too good for this field in the second leg of the quaddie.

NEXT BEST AT SANDOWN: Crackerjack Prince
We will be looking to make our presence known in the opening leg of the quaddie as the Archie Alexander-trained Crackerjack Prince looks to make it four wins in succession. The five-year-old gelding showed his versatility when rounding up his rivals in a similar race at Sale on August 21 on a Soft 7. Jordan Childs will need to make a decision early as to whether he goes forward or settles this son of Crackerjack King towards the rear of the field. He showed at his two wins prior to Sale that he can settle on speed and offer a kick in the home straight, and if the track at Sandown shows to be advantageous to on-speed runners, this bloke should handle the conditions with aplomb. If Childs can make sure Crackerjack Prince does not get trapped wide over 1800m, the pair will be hard to beat. This horse is low-flying, and we think the $4.80 with online bookmakers is a perfect price to take on.

SANDOWN VALUE BET: Botany
Peter Moody and Luke Nolen are set to combine once again in the third leg of the quaddie when last-start Cranbourne winner Botany looks to make it three wins from her first four races. The four-year-old relished the Heavy going on August 17 when coming from the rear of a five-horse field and finishing best. In doing so, she beat home subsequent city winner Rich Divinity, and on that form alone, she should be right in a race like this. From barrier 15, Nolen will need to have this American Pharoah mare settled towards the rear of the field once again. Botany is armed with a strong enough turn of foot to finish over the top of her rivals and continue her progression through the grades.
