For the second week in a row, the Lakeside track at Sandown Racecourse plays host to the metropolitan meeting in Victoria on Wednesday afternoon. With persistent rain forecast in the area for the 48 hours leading into the meeting, it is hard to see how we start on anything better than the track’s current Soft 6 rating. With the rail out 9m and the potential to be on a Soft 7 or Heavy 8 by the first, it will pay to find mudlarks throughout the day. Action gets underway at Sandown from 1pm AEST.
SANDOWN BEST BET: Moko
We do not need to wait too long for our best bet of the day, as the Anthony & Sam Freedman-trained Moko is set to return from a near five-month spell when she steps out over 1400m in the second event. The three-year-old filly is already placed at Group 3 level and has two further placings to her name at Listed level, yet somehow she is still a maiden. She went stride-for-stride with the progressive Williamsburg on Heavy ground at her last two starts before heading to the paddock, and this looks to be a dramatic drop in grade for the daughter of Impending. She has shown she can handle wet ground, and as long as Mark Zahra has her within striking distance on the home turn, Moko has more than enough class under belt to put away a field like this.

NEXT BEST AT SANDOWN: Cyclone Sally
Trainer Mick Bell certainly knows how to place a mudlark, and he looks to have done so perfectly on Wednesday with last-start Moonee Valley winner Cyclone Sally. The six-year-old led throughout on the Heavy 9 track she faced last time out and managed to beat Lackeen convincingly and didn’t look like slowing down. With apprentice Alana Kelly on board and claiming 2kg, the plan looks to be simple: find the rail, set the tempo, kick on the home turn and bring up a sixth win from her past 10 starts. With a record of 19: 7-2-1 on rain-affected ground, conditions will suit the Puissance De Lune mare perfectly. At $4.60 with online bookmakers, she looks to be one of the better bets of the day.

SANDOWN VALUE BET: Deel Blaster
The prolific trainer-jockey combination of Matt Laurie and Ben Melham will be looking to combine once again when Deel Blaster steps out in the opening leg of the quaddie. The five-year-old gelding has been thriving on wet tracks in recent times, having won on a Soft 7 at Cranbourne two starts back before backing it up with another victory at Bendigo on a Heavy 9 on August 14. He is rock-hard fit for this assignment, and as long as Melham gets him cover around midfield, it could be set up for Deel Blaster to swoop late. We are getting a nice price to find out how he goes.
