Sale racing preview

What Sale Races
Where Sale Turf Club – 1227 Maffra-Sale Rd, Sale VIC 3850
When Sunday, February 5, 2023
First Race 12:50pm AEDT

Racing in Victoria on Sunday afternoon heads to Sale Racecourse, where a bumper nine-race program is set down for decision. With plenty of rain around eastern Victoria on Friday and the chance of more precipitation on Saturday, it would be no surprise if the current Soft 5 rating becomes a Soft 7 or Heavy 8 come race one on Sunday. The opener is set to go at 12:50pm AEDT, while the rail comes out 2m the entire circuit.

Best Bet at Sale: Diddley Squat

The way the Trent Busuttin & Natalie Young-trained Diddley Squat won at Warrnambool on January 8 suggests he is a runner with a fair bit of talent under his bonnet. He managed to lead throughout on that day under Dean Holland and from barrier one on Sunday he is going to be very hard to beat. The Mikki Isle gelding looks set to gain an uncontested lead from the low draw under Craig Newitt and despite the rain-affected track being a relative unknown for this bloke, he looks to be a good thing on Sunday. The $2.50 on offer with online bookmakers looks a perfect price to launch into for the first leg of the quaddie.

Next Best at Sale: Distorted Mission

We were with the Simon Zahra-trained Distorted Mission when it finished third at Pakenham on January 19 when leading the field up before being overpowered inside the final 50m. The three-year-old gelding had finished second on his two previous starts, which included splitting city-proven Michelotti and subsequent two-time winner Attrition in July on a Heavy 9 at Sandown. His early barrier speed offsets barrier 13 and with Damien Thornton sticking on board, we expect him to hunt for the rail and try and snare a couple of cheap sectionals over the 1407m. Distorted Mission looks almost certain to gain an uncontested lead throughout and considering he is already placed on a Heavy 9 in tougher company than this, he looks a great play at Sale.

Best Value at Sale: High Done

With a bit of luck, we have a bank built during the middle portion of the card and we can have a far crack at the Paul & Tracey Templeton-trained High Done in the last. The seven-year-old gelding simply could not go with Commodus when finishing second at Moe on January 15 but had enough of a gap between he and the third horse to suggest he was worth sticking with next start. The 55-start veteran is a genuine on-pace galloper and from barrier seven, Lachlan King will look to find the pole, dictate terms and have this bloke break his rivals’ hearts once again in 0-64 company. He is proven on wet ground and with fitness on his side, High Done will take some catching at a nice price with online betting sites.
