Saturday signifies horse racing spring is almost upon us as Rosehill hosts the Listed Winter Challenge. It’s worth noting that last year’s third placegetter (Gold Trip) and seventh placegetter (Durston) went on to take out the Group 1 Melbourne Cup and Caulfield Cup respectively. The feature event is supported by a terrific 10-race program as the rail sits out +7m the entire circuit, and Good 4 conditions on display for race-day. The first race is set to get underway at 11:15am AEST.
Winter Challenge: Barbie’s Fox
There were plenty of forgivable runs from the Listed Winter Stakes at Randwick on July 8, but none more so than Barbie’s Fox. The Ben & JD Hayes-trained galloper was sitting behind a wall of runners when trying to chase home Ucalledit, and had she received a clear shot at her opposition, we’re comfortable in saying this six-year-old mare would’ve been right in the finish. The extra 100m looks ideal and with a genuine tempo engaged for the back markers to come into play late, we expect Barbie’s Fox to be thundering home under jockey Zac Lloyd.

Best Bet: Brudenell
Brudenell heads into the weekend third-up and should be primed for this assignment after being headed by a length at his latest effort on July 8 at Randwick. He pinged the lids to lead on that occasion as Insurrection got the better of him in the closing stages; however, boxed on gamely to cling onto second position. It was a ding-dong battle down the straight and with minimal speed installed this time, we’re confident Brudenell can adopt similar tactics. Tim Clark should allow this son of Russian Revolution to stride forward and with a kick in the locker, Brudenell will take plenty of chasing down in the shadows of the post.

Race 5 – #2 Brudenell (3)

Next Best: Inhibitions
Inhibitions is set to make her return from a 105-day spell on Saturday and looks perfectly placed to pick up her second career win. She competed in some quality two-year-old races last preparation and finished closely behind genuine spring contenders like Amur and Tom Kitten. This filly has trialled outstanding upon return and with barrier one giving Zac Lloyd the opportunity to find the leaders back throughout the 1200m contest, Inhibitions should get every conceivable chance to bag another win.

Best Value: Sweet Ride
Sweet Ride got a pass mark for us when he returned at Caulfield on July 8 in the Sir John Monash Stakes. He was ridden out of his comfort zone when getting back and wide throughout the 1100m journey but still found the line nicely under a cold steer from Linda Meech. This time, we’re expecting Annabel Neasham to give instructions to head forward and park behind the short-priced favourite, Omni Man. Sweet Ride is already a Group 3 winner at this course and distance, so we’ve got a few less convictions on Sweet Ride – particularly at a juicy price with top online bookmakers.
