What Golden Slipper Day 2025
Where Rosehill Gardens Racecourse – James Ruse Dr, Rosehill NSW 2142
When Saturday, March 22, 2025
First Race 12:30pm AEDT

A massive day of Group 1 action is lined up at Rosehill on Saturday afternoon, with the time-honoured Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m) headlining a bumper 10-part program.

The $5 million two-year-old feature is surrounded by a stacked card, including four more Group 1 races, with the Group 1 Ranvet Stakes (2000m) and Group 1 Rosehill Guineas (2000m) oozing quality on one of the nation’s greatest days of racing.

The rail moves out +3m the entire circuit after racing in the true position for Coolmore Classic Day last weekend, and with no significant rainfall forecast to hamper proceedings, punters can expect the surface to remain in the Good range.

2025 Golden Slipper Day is scheduled to get underway at 12:30pm local time.

Race 1: BM72 Midway Handicap (1500m)

A wide-open BM72 Midway kicks off proceedings, where the Gerald Ryan & Sterling Alexiou-trained It’s A Wonder gets the nod. The daughter of Dundeel surged through the line closing on the heels of Rush Attack at this course and distance last time out, narrowly missing as she put in a late dive under Kerrin McEvoy. She should be stalking a hot speed drawn in barrier two, and with It’s A Wonder rock-hard fit heading into her sixth start of the campaign, watch for her to be flashing home in the opener.

  • Lugarno silks10

  • Hell’s Itch silks13

    HELL’S ITCH

  • Promitto silks1

Race 2: Group 3 Epona Stakes (1900m)

It’s A Knockout appears well placed third-up in the campaign after proving gallant in defeat in the Group 3 Aspiration Quality (1600m) at Randwick on March 8. Little Baia gave all her rivals the slip in that event and was able to boot clear after ticking over some soft sectionals in the middle stages; however, that shouldn’t be the case stepping out to the 1900m. Tim Clark will look to be positive from stall five and could potentially lead this field, and with It’s A Knockout yet to miss the frame in five starts, watch for her to give a bold sight against the girls in the Group 3 Epona Stakes (1900m).

Race 3: Group 3 N E Manion Cup (2400m)

Athabascan appears primed to strike in the Group 3 N E Manion Cup (2400m) after a luckless effort in the Listed Randwick City Stakes (2000m) on March 8 last time out. The son of Almanzor would’ve won the race had he got clear running at the furlong pole, with the six-year-old unable to extend as Tommy Berry was forced to put the whip away. He appears well weighted against his opposition despite needing to carry 59kg to victory, and with Athabascan possessing the best staying credentials stretching out to 2400m, he represents good value at the $5.50 with BlondeBet.

Race 4: Listed Darby Munro Stakes (1200m)

The Darby Munro Stakes (1200m) shapes up as one of the more intriguing races on the program as Autumn Glow returns from a 182-day spell. The undefeated filly was poised to be the star of the spring before suffering a setback towards the end of last preparation, allowing Lady Shenandoah to burst onto the scene and take the mantle for the Chris Waller barn. She’s trialled like a bomb heading into this first-up assignment, and provided she returns at her brilliant best, expect Autumn Glow to justify the short price with horse racing bookmakers.

Race 5: Group 1 Ranvet Stakes (2000m)

There’s no prize for tipping Via Sistina in the 2025 Ranvet Stakes; however, she does appear relatively bulletproof at the $1.45 with Picklebet. She meets a similar field to what she beat in the Group 1 Verry Elleegant Stakes (1600m) last time out and should only improve stepping out to the 2000m third-up. She won this race on Australian debut last year and a repeat performance should see Via Sistina lap this lot.

Race 6: Group 1 Rosehill Guineas (2000m)

The lone filly Aeliana could be the forgotten runner in this year’s edition of the Rosehill Guineas as she attempts to turn the tables on Broadsiding and Swiftfalcon from the Group 1 Randwick Guineas (1600m). She appeared to hit a flat spot turning for home but balanced up nicely in the final furlong to suggest she’s ready to be tested over the 2000m third-up. The Chris Waller barn has a terrific record in this race winning four of the last seven editions, and with Jason Collett likely to land on the leaders’ back throughout, Aeliana should get every chance to add to that tally.

  • Aeliana silks11

Race 7: Group 1 Geroge Ryder Stakes (1500m)

Ceolwulf was unsuited dropping back in trip second-up in the Group 1 Canterbury Stakes (1300m) on March 8 and should be a big improver heading into the Group 1 George Ryder Stakes (1500m). The son of Tavistock was a dominant winner at this course and distance last preparation before claiming back-to-back Group 1 successes in the spring. The fact he suffered a minor set back missing the Verry Elleegant Stakes is a minor concern, however, there’s still enough meat on the bone at the $5.50 with Bet365 to have him on top, and with other key chances like Fangirl and Tom Kitten drawn off the track, Ceolwulf should get the drop on them in the 2025 George Ryder.

Selections:

  • Ceolwulf silks1

Race 8: Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m)

A capacity field of 16 juveniles are set to line up in Australia’s richest two-year-old contest, where the Chris Waller-trained Wodeton holds the call as $4.80 favourite with horse betting sites. Tempted is on the second line of betting at $5, while Marhoona is the big firmer into $10 after opening $13 post-barrier draw. Who will take out the 2025 Golden Slipper? Get our thoughts down below.

Race 9: Group 1 Galaxy (1100m)

A full field of 14 are set to scorch the turf in the Group 1 Galaxy (1100m) where Private Harry has been all the rage in betting. It’s the other progressive type that gets the verdict, however, as Briasa returns after a 126-day spell. The Smart Missile burst onto the scene at the end of last preparation, culminating in a classy victory in the Group 2 Hunter (1300m) at Newcastle on November 16. They simply do not trial any better than what he did at Rosehill on March 6 leading into this first-up assignment, and although Tyler Schiller will need to overcome gate 15, Briasa has the upside to get the job done.

Race 10: Group 3 Birthday Card Stakes (1200m)

French import Rose Bloom only had the one run last season for the Chris Waller barn, finishing six lengths behind Belclare in the Group 2 Hot Danish Stakes (1400m) on November 9. She looked underdone on that occasion, however, that doesn’t appear to be the case first-up on Saturday, with the Lope De Vega mare taking steady improvement in two recent barrier trials. James McDonald takes the reins from an awkward draw (9), but with a class edge on some key rivals expect Rose Bloom to be thundering over the top at a good price with Dabble in the Group 3 Birthday Card Stakes (1200m).

  • Rose Bloom silks4
