What Tancred Stakes Day 2024
Where Rosehill Gardens Racecourse – James Ruse Dr, Rosehill NSW 2142
When Saturday, March 30, 2024
First Race 12:30pm AEDT

Rosehill Gardens is the destination for more Group 1 action this Saturday afternoon, with the Group 1 Tancred Stakes (2400m) and Group 1 Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m) headlining a bumper 10-race program. The rail moves out +6m between 900m to winning post, while the remainder sits out +5m. No heavy rainfall is expected to hinder proceedings, so punters should be confident doing the form for a genuine Good 4 surface this weekend. The opening race is scheduled to get underway at 12:30pm AEDT.

Race 1: Midway Handicap BM72 (1300m)

We kick things off with a wide-open BM72 Midway contest, where Go Troppo makes his return after 127 days off the scene. The son of Hinchinbrook doesn’t traditionally boast a strong first-up record, however, his most recent jump-out when fending off Buckaroo at Warwick Farm on March 12 reads particularly well for an event like this. Watch for Jason Collett to ping the lids from stall 12 and cross to lead them throughout the 1300m journey, and provided he can steal a cheap sectional or two, Go Troppo will give followers a sight at each-way odds.

Selections:

  • Peak silks13

  • Black Duke silks3

Race 2: Group 3 Neville Sellwood Stakes (2000m)

After battling on gamely against the girls in the Group 1 Coolmore Classic (1500m) last start, Renaissance Woman appears ready to peak third-up in the Group 3 Neville Sellwood Stakes (2000m). The four-year-old by Reliable Man was only getting warm in the concluding stages on that occasion and the Bjorn Baker-trained mare should be far better suited getting out to the 2000m on Saturday. Rachel King will have no choice but to drag back for cover from barrier seven, but if the swoopers can come into play, watch for Renaissance Woman to be doing her best work late down the centre of the course.

Race 3: Group 3 Baillieu (1400m)

The Best Bet of the afternoon comes up in the Group 3 Baillieu (1400m) as the John O’Shea-trained Linebacker makes his second-up appearance of the campaign. The son of Super Seth couldn’t have been more impressive on debut at Hawkesbury on February 21, giving his rivals a galloping lesson to score by four lengths on the wire. He hasn’t raced since, or taken on any class opposition, however, if his most recent barrier trial at this track on March 18 is anything to go by, it appears Linebacker should measure up nicely against this crop of two-year-olds.

Selections:

  • Linebacker silks6

Race 4: Group 2 Tulloch Stakes (2000m)

The Group 2 Tulloch Stakes (2000m) is the last opportunity for the three-year-olds to stake their claim for the ATC Derby (2400m) next Saturday. The Chris Waller-trained Tannhauser looks to be a good each-way prospect with online bookmakers, as the Dundeel colt was making strong inroads towards the inside running rail at his most recent effort in the Group 2 Phar Lap Stakes (1500m) on March 16. He may need some luck drawn out in barrier 16, but with a few extra scratchings set to make the task manageable for Regan Bayliss, punters should expect Tannhauser to outrun his current price.

Selections:

  • Tannhauser silks1

Race 5: Group 3 Emancipation Stakes (1500m)

The Group 3 Emancipation Stakes (1500m) is for the fillies & mares and sets up perfectly for the Chris Waller-trained Vienna Princess. She has been unplaced at her first two appearances of the campaign but has been forced to race on unsuitable Soft track conditions, with her latest performance a bold effort behind stablemate Zougotcha in the Group 1 Coolmore Classic (1500m) a fortnight ago. The daughter of Snitzel finally gets back on top of the ground on Saturday, and with a swing in the weight on some key rivals, watch for Vienna Princess to explode in the final 200m.

Race 6: Group 3 Star Kingdom Stakes (1200m)

The sprinters will be scorching the Rosehill turf in the Group 3 Star Kingdom Stakes (1200m), where Libertad appears ready to peak third-up. The son of Russian Revolution suffered a setback two starts back due to cardiac arrhythmia but bounced back impressively last time out in the Group 3 Maurice McCarten Stakes (1100m) to be beaten by a half-length on the wire. The 1200m should be ideal for the Annabel Neasham-trained three-year-old, and provided the break fall his way from stall one, Libertad should get the last crack at his rivals in the shadows of the post.

Selections:

  • Libertad silks11

Race 7: Group 1 Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m)

The Group 1 Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m) has been built as a match-race between Orchestral and Zardozi since the Roger James & Robert Wellwood camp confirmed the Kiwi filly would make the trip down under. The daughter of Savabeel has been sensational in her four wins this season, highlighted when making a mess of her rivals in the Group 1 New Zealand Derby (2400m) at Ellerslie on March 2. She gets favourable Good track conditions to go along with James McDonald in the saddle, and although Zardozi may be able to turn the tables in the Australian Oaks (2400m), it is hard to be against the New Zealand raider at the first time of asking.

Selections:

  • Orchestral silks1

  • Zardozi silks2

Race 8: Group 1 Tancred Stakes (2400m)

The stayers take centre stage in the Group 1 Tancred Stakes at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday, where the William Haggas-trained Post Impressionist holds the call after a dominant victory in the Group 3 N E Manion Cup (2400m) last weekend. Buckaroo appears to be the main danger on the second line of betting at $4.80 after finishing off gamely in the Group 1 Ranvet Stakes (2000m) on the same day. Tom Kitten ($7.00) gets set to take on the older horses for the first time, with Godolphin enlisting the services of Jamie Kah. Will the Europeans prove too strong? Or is there an upset on the cards?

Race 9: Group 3 Doncaster Prelude (1500m)

We simply don’t know the ceiling of Another Wil as the Ciaron Maher-trained gelding makes his way to Sydney attempting to book his ticket to the Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m). He has cleared out by a combined 11.3 lengths across his three victories throughout the campaign, with the son of Street Boss impressing at every outing. He deserves his chance to stamp some authority over some quality opposition and he finally gets that opportunity in the Group 3 Doncaster Prelude (1500m). Time will tell; however, Another Wil may prove too classy for this lot.

Selections:

Race 10: BM88 Handicap (1400m)

The final race of the program is a tricky one to dissect, however, the Bjorn Baker-trained Iknowastar has strong claims on resumption. The gelding by Star Witness put together four wins on the trot before failing to fire a shot in the $3 million Big Dance (1600m) on the first Tuesday of November. His most recent 6.5-length barrier trial victory at this course on March 18 seems to suggest he is ready for a first-up assault, and with the stable happy to kick-off his campaign over 1400m, it shows real intent Iknowastar is ready to win on return.
