The 2022 Golden Eagle raceday at Rosehill Gardens will feature a huge 10-race program, highlighted by the $10 million Golden Eagle alongside the $3 million Nature Strip Stakes. For the first time in many weeks, we could be racing on a Good surface at a Sydney metropolitan race track on a Saturday. The surface is currently rated as a Soft 6, but there is good weather on the way for Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The rail will be in the true position at Rosehill, and the first race kicks off at 12:10pm AEDT.

Race 1: Highway Handicap (1200m)
In the opening race on Golden Eagle Day, we have a massive 18-horse field for the Highway Handicap over 1200m. Joe Cleary brings his four-year-old gelding King Gutho to town for the first time in over 12 months after winning his first-up run and running a close second at his most recent start. This son of Better Than Ready has an electric turn of foot, which he has shown at his last two starts this preparation, and he will need to show it again on Saturday as he will most definitely go back from his wide barrier. As long as there is a genuine tempo for this 1200m event, this talented galloper will have every chance to produce his turn of foot and get us off to a winning start at Rosehill Gardens.

Race 2: Benchmark 78 Handicap (1200m)
After running in the Group 3 PJ Bell Stakes, James Carr Stakes and Hawkesbury Guineas back in the Sydney Autumn Carnival earlier this year, the Joseph Pride-trained Party For One looks to be a very good chance to take out this Benchmark 78 Handicap over 1200m. This daughter of Rubick was desperately unlucky last start at Warwick Farm over 1200m, when she was making good ground along the fence before running up behind a wall of horses. She only finished half a length off the winner in a very tight finish. Now that she is fifth-up for the preparation, she will be very fit and coming off a very good run in defeat, Saturday could be the day that she records her second career win.

Race 3: Benchmark 78 Handicap (1500m)
The Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained Rangi Toa will return from a five-month spell in race three over 1500m. The stable have given this four-year-old gelding two trials before kicking him off on Saturday, where he ran second both times. This son of Shamexpress has never lost when he has been first-up recording two wins from two first-up runs. In his second preparation with Waterhouse & Bott this gelding will be extremely fit first-up, and he will take up the lead in this race and look to lead from the barriers to the winning post.

Race 4: Benchmark 78 Handicap (1900m)
The John Sargent-trained Gin Martini will be looking for her third win of her career when she steps out in the Benchmark 78 Handicap over 1900m on Saturday. After a sub-par performance in her first-up run this preparation, she was much better at her second-up start when boxing on for sixth over 1600m in the Group 3 Angst Stakes on October 15. This daughter of Rip Van Winkle ran third in the Group 1 Australian Oaks over 2400m during the Sydney Autumn Carnival, while she also ran fourth in The Roses over 2100m at Group 2 level, showing that she needs much further than the 1400m and 1600m she has seen so far this preparation. Bookies have got this girl marked at $12 and we are more than happy to take a piece of that for this talented stayer.

Race 5: Benchmark 78 Handicap (1100m)
Our best bet will come up in the fifth race of the day, where we will be siding with the Michael, Wayne & John Hawkes-trained Mars Mission as he looks to record win three at start number eight. This talented four-year-old gelding has shown good improvement throughout his first two preparation and the Hawkes team will be looking for him to improve even further this campaign after running in a Group 3 and Listed race last preparation. This son of Deep Field showed at his first-up run that he may have been lacking a bit of fitness; however, he should be ready to go second-up, as his form suggests with one win from one second-up run. Zac Lloyd will stick with this guy, and with his 3kg claim and jumping from barrier three, this race sets up very nicely for this progressive gelding.

Race 6: Rosehill Gold Cup (2000m)
The Chris Waller-trained Yonkers will be ridden by one of the best jockeys in the world, Frankie Dettori, in the Rosehill Gold Cup. This seven-year-old gelding ran eighth in this race last year and will be looking for a much better result this time, coming off a good second-place finish in the Group 3 Coongy Cup at Caulfield on October 12. This son of Medaglia D’oro is a Group 2 and Group 3 winner throughout his career as well as a multiple placegetter in Group 2 and Group 3 races. If we are still in the Soft range by 3:20pm, this race will suit this guy down to the ground.

Race 7: Nature Strip Stakes (1300m)
The Nature Strip Stakes will be the big event for the sprinters, with most of the runners coming through The Everest and the Sydney Stakes a fortnight ago. The winner will take home $1.75 million. Online bookmakers have the John O’Shea runner Lost And Running as the race favourite ($2.70), closely followed by the Peter & Paul Snowden-trained Mazu ($3.80).

Race 8: Golden Eagle (1500m)
The Golden Eagle, one of the world’s richest horse races for four-year-olds, will be run and won over 1500m at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday. The winner will take home a cool $5 million from the $10 million prize pool. The bookies have marked the Ciaron Maher & David Eustace-trained import Light Infantry as a clear market favourite ($4), with Chain Of Lightning ($7) and I Wish I Win ($8) on the next lines of betting.

Race 9: Midway Handicap (1500m)
In the penultimate race of Golden Eagle Day, the exciting Kayobi will look to add another win to his already impressive record. After recording a very nice win first-up this preparation at Kembla Grange over 1200m on October 13, this four-year-old gelding has now won three of his first five careers starts. This son of Maurice has never missed the top two in his career, and we don’t think that will have changed after this Benchmark 68 Midway Handicap. Jason Collett has chosen to stick with this progressive galloper after winning on him last start, and if he can find a good position from barrier 10, he will be unleashing with a big finish down the outside in the concluding stages of this race.

Race 10: Benchmark 78 Handicap (1300m)
Zac Lloyd and James Cummings will combine with Arbitration in the final event on Golden Eagle Day, continuing their partnership after an outstanding win last start in a Benchmark 72 Handicap at this track and trip on September 28. This very talented four-year-old mare showed a brilliant turn of foot to burst through a gap at the 200m mark and quickly put away her rivals to win by just under a length, claiming her third victory at her ninth career start. Jumping from barrier seven with 54kg on her back after Lloyd’s 3kg claim, this girl will have every chance from the back of the field to run on and get a very similar run to what she received last start.
