Metro racing returns to Rosehill Gardens Racecourse on Saturday afternoon, with the Group 3 Southern Cross Stakes (1200m) headlining a bumper 10-race program.
The $250,00 sprinting feature is supported by the Group 3 Canonbury Stakes (1100m) & Group 3 Widden Stakes (1100m), where punters will get a glimpse of some potential star two-year-olds, putting their hand up for Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m) contention in the autumn.
The rail moves out +3m the entire circuit for the meeting, and with the track rated a Soft 5 at the time of acceptances, punters can expect the surface to maintain that rating with more scattered showers forecast leading into the weekend. The opening event is scheduled to get underway at 12:30pm local time.
Southern Cross Stakes Tip: Accredited
The Joseph Pride-trained Accredited gets his first chance to claim stakes success in the 2025 Southern Cross Stakes. The son of All Too Hard has strung together a hat-trick of wins this preparation, with the progressive five-year-old gelding winning by a combined seven lengths across those victories, including a four-length domination of his rivals at Randwick on January 4. This is clearly his toughest task to date; however, he appears well-weighted with the minimum 53kg on his back, allowing Jay Ford to utilise the jump-lead-win tactics Accredited has become accustomed to this time in.
Southern Cross Stakes
Race 8 – #9 Accredited (5)
5yo Gelding | T: Joseph Pride | J: Jay Ford (53kg)
Canonbury Stakes Tip: Tropic
The two-year-old colts & geldings step out in the Canonbury Stakes, where Chris Waller & James McDonald will be looking to combine with Tropic. The unraced Zoustar gelding has impressed in his two barrier trials, cruising through the wire in his latest piece of work at this course on January 23. He was dual-accepted for a race at Canterbury on Friday night, however, with the Waller barn showing confidence to send him to stakes company on debut, punters should expect a bold showing by Tropic in the first two-year-old feature.
Canonbury Stakes
Race 3 – #7 Tropic (1)
2yo Colt | T: Chris Waller | J: James McDonald (54.5kg)
Widden Stakes Tip: Tempted
Tempted showed a blistering turn-of-foot to claim victory on debut at Warwick Farm on December 18, and although it’s been over a month between runs, there’s no reason why the Street Boss filly can’t go on with the job. She’s been kept up to the mark with a tick-over trial at Rosehill on January 23 heading into this second-up assignment, and although Tim Clark will have no choice but to drag back towards the rear of the field from stall nine, watch for the Godolphin blue silks of Tempted to be storming down the centre of the course to justify favouritism with horse racing bookmakers in the 2025 Widden Stakes.
Widden Stakes
Race 4 – #3 Tempted (9)
2yo Filly | T: James Cummings | J: Tim Clark (54.5kg)
Best Bet at Rosehill: Pocketing
There’s an argument to be made Pocketing should be undefeated heading into his sixth-career start. The son of Grunt was a good thing licked in his latest outing at Canterbury on New Year’s Day, held up for the entire straight before making inroads when it was all over to get within 2.4 lengths of Oh Diamond Lil. Zac Lloyd will be searching for cover and keeping the three-year-old out of trouble from barrier 10, and provided the breaks fall his way, Pocketing should prove too classy for this lot.
Best Bet
Race 2 – #9 Pocketing (10)
3yo Gelding | T: Richard & Will Freedman | J: Zac Lloyd (54kg)
Best Value at Rosehill: Tapa Kick
The Paul Messara & Leah Gavranich-trained Tapa Kick represents terrific value with Bet365 as the Scissor Kick gelding heads to Highway company for the first time. The four-year-old has never missed the frame across his 11 starts, including his first-up effort at Muswellbrook on January 13, where he was forced to lug an impossible 64.5kg to victory. He drops 7kg heading into this second-up assignment, and with Tapa Kick likely to relish the 1500m journey, the $9.00 available is simply too big to ignore in the opening event of the program.
Best Value
Race 1 – #9 Tapa Kick (3)
4yo Gelding | T: Paul Messara & Leah Gavranich | J: Zac Lloyd (57.5kg)
