Rose Of Kingston Stakes
Group Two Betting Guide
Date: | Saturday, October 7, 2023 |
Location: | Flemington Racecourse – Melbourne, Victoria |
Prize Money: | $300,000 |
Distance: | 1400m |
Held at Flemington Racecourse in early October, the Group 2 Rose Of Kingston Stakes is a 1400m event restricted to mares aged four and older.
In 2023, the Rose Of Kingston Stakes is run for $300,000, with Excelida the defending champion, having won the 2022 running in impressive fashion.
Since it’s inception, the Rose Of Kingston Stakes was a Listed Race, before being upgraded to Group 3 from 1997 and a Group 2 from 2005.
Considering the time of the race, the Rose Of Kingston Stakes is often a strong form reference for the Group 1 Empire Rose Stakes (1600m) on the opening day of the Melbourne Cup Carnival.
The race is registered as the Blazer Stakes, but is run as the Rose Of Kingston Stakes.
The 2023 Rose Of Kingston Stakes is set to be run on October 7, 2023.

Aided by a perfect steer from Michael Dee, it was Excelida who finished the best to claim victory in the 2022 Rose Of Kingston Stakes. Despite drawing a touch awkwardly in barrier seven, Michael Dee was able to lob the mare in the one-one position upon settling and was able to stalk Tycoon Evie throughout before making her move. As it looked like Argentia and She’s All Class would fight out the finish inside the final 200m, Excelida found another gear to swoop on the leaders and bring up a maiden stakes win in the Flemington Group 2 event.

Hailing from Tasmania, the Bill Ryan-trained Still A Star ($10) arrived in time to claim the 2021 Rose Of Kingston Stakes. Despite needing to make up three lengths with 100m to go, jockey Luke Currie had Still A Star hit top gear when it mattered most, to eventually mow down race leader Pride Of Jenni in the shadows of the winning post, to prevail by the barest of margins.

Fresh from a BM70 win at Sale at her previous start, the Trent Busuttin & Natalie Young-trained Sierra Sue ($17) caused a massive boilover in the 2020 Group 2 Rose Of Kingston Stakes. Despite settling in the second-half of the field and needing an abundance of luck in the home straight, jockey Michael Walker was able to pick the gaps as they appeared, managing to guide a low-flying Sierra Sue to victory. She looked like a hard watch for punters with 300m to go, but with a thunderous turn of foot and being able to travel behind eventual runner-up She Shao Fly, Sierra Sue managed to dart along the rail to score in impressive circumstances.

Talented mare Haut Brion Her, who initially struggled with the anti-clockwise direction of racing in her first two Melbourne outings, made a triumphant return to form with an impressive victory in the Blazer Stakes at Flemington. Before her Melbourne campaign, Haut Brion Her had showcased her potential with four consecutive victories in Sydney, all in the clockwise direction. Trainer Chris Waller decided to transfer her to his Flemington stables for a new challenge. In her first Melbourne start at The Valley last month, the four-year-old mare was narrowly defeated by Tofane. She then secured another second-place finish in a 1400m benchmark race for mares at Caulfield. However, in her first attempt in a stakes race in the Group Two 1400m Blazer Stakes, Haut Brion Her ($5.50) demonstrated her class. Jockey Michael Walker guided her to the lead, and when they straightened for home at the 400m mark, Haut Brion Her surged forward. She extended her lead, leaving her rivals trailing behind. The backmarkers made efforts to catch up, but they couldn’t close the gap.
