While this Saturday’s meeting at Rockhampton doesn’t hold metropolitan status, all eyes will be on the television at 4:59pm AEST for the inaugural running of The Archer (1300m). The $440,000 slot-style race has attracted some of the best horses, jockeys and trainers from around the country, including Group 1 winners Streets Of Avalon and Tyzone. HorseBetting’s Queensland racing analyst presents you with his best bet for The Archer, as well as his best bets and quaddie numbers across the other seven races at Callaghan Park on May 7. The track is rated a Soft 5 and the rail is out 2.5m for the entire course, with race one set to jump at 12:29pm AEST. Here are our free Rockhampton tips for Saturday, May 7.
The Archer Best Bet – Master Jamie
We are sure there will be plenty of people laughing as they read this Rockhampton tip, but we genuinely believe Master Jamie can give these southern horses a shake in the $440,000 feature. Graeme Green’s five-year-old is as tough as they come, winning 15 of his 38 races, with 10 of those wins coming at his home track, here at Rockhampton. Given his rating, he finds it tough to win at Rockhampton at times as he has to carry big weights of 63kg+, so getting down to 59kg – even against this grade – is going to be a godsend. The son of Poet’s Voice gets the services of the experienced Brad Pengelly on Saturday which is a huge advantage, while barrier five ensures he doesn’t have to do any work in search for the leading role. If ever a home ground advantage comes into play, it is in this race for Master Jamie.

Best Bet at Rockhampton – Patrolling
Whenever Ricky Vale and Ryan Wiggins combine in Central Queensland, punters should take note. In two Queensland runs, newcomer to the Vale yard, Patrolling, has been extremely impressive, winning by a combined 2.5 lengths at Rockhampton and Mackay. The son of Epaulette has been able to lead throughout in both of his races, before kicking away to win stylishly. The rise to Benchmark 65 company is a little trickier against horses like Courtesy Bus the in-form Whoa Lola, but the four-year-old is going to be the one they will all have to catch. He still looked as though he had plenty in the tank in both wins of late, so we look forward to seeing what he can do if asked for the supreme effort.

Next Best at Rockhampton – Deep Breath
Deep Breath faces his biggest test to date in Saturday’s Rockhampton Amateurs Cup, but he looks well weighted to go on with the job and add to the picket fence. The Nick Walsh yard is absolutely flying of late, with 22 winners from the last 50 starters at a winning strike rate of 44%. Deep Breath, a former Greg Eurell-trained galloper, has won his past four starts at Rockhampton and Mackay, leading throughout in all four wins. The son of Choisir has progressed nicely through his grades winning by big margins in all four wins, but he now has to do it against Open company. Drawn barrier five, Brisbane rider Jim Byrne is likely to take the five-year-old straight to the front over the mile and give the field something to chase. There is nothing to suggest that he can’t make it five in a row.

Best Value at Rockhampton – Absolut Artie
The consolation race for The Archer is The Fitzroy, named after the Fitzroy River which separates the north and southsides of Rockhampton. A good field has been assembled for The Fitzroy, with a number of southern visitors, however we are siding with one horse who knows the Rocky track better than anyone. Absolut Artie reigned supreme in 2019/20, winning the Rockhampton Cup and the Rockhampton Horse of the Year, so it would be fitting that he adds The Fitzroy to his collection. The almost white horse has drawn the carpark out in barrier 18, but it won’t be too much of a concern for him, as he is likely to use his customary gate speed to find the front and roll along. In his last five starts, Absolut Artie has had to carry an average weight of 61.9kg, so getting in with just 56.5kg will be a godsend for him. Catch him if you can!
