The Red Roses Stakes is a Group 3 feature race for three-year-old fillies held over 1100m at Flemington Racecourse, with the next instalment due to be run on November 9, 2023.
Traditionally held as the final event on VRC Oaks day during the Melbourne Cup Carnival, the Red Roses Stakes is often a target race for sprinters looking to go to the next level ahead of the upcoming autumn.
One of those fillies in recent times to claim the Red Roses Stakes and go on to Group 1 success was Spright who would go on to claim the Robert Sangster Stakes as a five-year-old mare 18 months after her Flemington success.
First run in 1983 over 1200m as a Principal Race, the Red Roses Stakes has been run at Group 3 level over 1100m since 2014.

Aitch Two Oh gave trainers Richard & Chantelle Jolly their first winner of the 2022 Melbourne Cup Carnival and their horse her first Group victory of her career when taking out the 2022 Red Roses Stakes. After jumping as a $23 outsider, Aitch Two Oh held on after sitting outside the leaders to take out the Group 3 Red Roses Stakes, just defeating the fast finishing La Danseuse Rouge and Bay Thirteen. After the initial rider for Aitch Two Oh, Jake Toeroek, couldn’t get a flight over to Melbourne from Adelaide on race morning, the Jolly’s were left without a rider. However, fortunately for them, James McDonald didn’t have a ride in this last race of the day, so he took it and it reaped dividends.

Flying Evelyn had been winless since making a successful career debut at Moonee Valley in February. However, in a driving finish, Flying Evelyn finished fast to defeat A Very Fine Red by a half-length with a further half-head back to Seradess in third. Having settled at the rear of the field, Brett Prebble needed a fair amount of luck to get the filly in clear air at the right time. When the gap appeared 200m from home, Flying Evelyn jumped out of the ground late to score one of the more impressive wins of the day.

After breaking the 1000m track record at Moonee Valley set by Nature Strip at her most recent start, Written Beauty from the Team Hawkes barn continued her success with her first Group success in the Red Roses Stakes. William Pike managed to have her in clear air throughout the 1100m scamper and despite potentially being vulnerable late, the filly kept finding under pressure to get the better of Marboosha as an odds-on pop to help favourite punters finish the day on a winning note.

Tony & Calvin McEvoy rounded out VRC Oaks Day in style when their impressive filly Sisstar led throughout to claim the Group 3 Red Roses Stakes. Despite Barend Vorster needing to go for home early on the Zoustar filly, the $9 chance with bookies kept finding under the urgings of Vorster to narrowly hold off Niccovi in what can only be described as a gutsy win.
