The Listed Winter Stakes (1400m) headlines a stacked 10-race program at Royal Randwick this Saturday. The rail is out +9m from the 1000m marker to the winning post, while the remainder of the course will sit out +7m. At the time of writing, the track condition is classified as a Soft 5; however, with some drying days heading into the weekend, we’ll be doing the form for the surface to sit in the Good range come the opening race at 11am AEST.
Winter Stakes Tip: Longvillers
The Chris Waller-trained Longvillers was disappointing when resuming last start at this course and distance, only beating two runners home in the Civic Stakes on June 24. He got back to last and was never in contention with a lack of speed to bring him into the race; however, he closed off well considering his long break. This time he draws barrier one, as opposed to the outside last time, so expect Jason Collett to utilise the draw to sit much closer to the leaders when turning in. Longvillers’ second-up profile is much better than his fresh record, so we’ll be hoping for a dramatic improvement on Saturday afternoon.

Best Bet at Randwick: Cigar Flick
It’s been 126 days since Cigar Flick faced the starter, and she comes out of some very strong form lines from last preparation. After breaking her maiden status in her first career start on January 6, the filly then bumped into Learning To Fly in the Group 3 Widden Stakes and the Group 2 Reisling Stakes respectively. She wasn’t disgraced in either performance and has produced two eye-catching barrier trials heading into this first-up assignment. Epic Proportions is the galloper they need to chase down, but we’re confident Cigar Flick can resume a winner.

Next Best at Randwick: Mutamanni
Mutamanni has won two of his three starts since arriving in Australia, his latest victory coming at Warwick Farm on June 28 when circling most of the field before putting his rivals away over 1600m. He now searches for the 2000m for the first time in the campaign, and we have no issues with Mutamanni staying the trip. With Aristonous also accepted to run at Caulfield, we’re more than happy to take the current price available with online bookmakers for Mutamanni to chalk up another win.

Best Value at Randwick: Bella Rouge
The market seems to think Iowna Merc has the penultimate all sewn up; however, we want to make a case for Bella Rouge on an each-way basis. She’s first-up after a 170-day spell and comes out of some solid form last preparation, culminating in a fourth-place finish behind stablemate Brookspire at the Gold Coast on January 19. She started $15 that day, but prior to that the online betting sites wanted to be on her side, starting $5.50, $3.50, $7.50, $6 and $4.50 in her other performances – all in benchmark company. Her trials have been good enough to suggest she’s wound-up heading to Randwick.
