Randwick Racecourse is one of four horse racing tracks owned and operated by the Australian Turf Club, along with Rosehill Gardens, Canterbury Park and Warwick Farm. Randwick and Rosehill are the two main tracks in Sydney, with more than 40 metropolitan race meetings held across the two tracks each calendar year. Randwick plays host to 20 Group 1 races, with eight of those held across the two days of The Championships in autumn, while The Everest is the showcase race in spring. The Sydney Eastern Suburbs track has held race meetings since 1833.

Randwick address & how to get there
Randwick Racecourse is located on Alison Road, Randwick, which is approximately 5km from the Sydney CBD.
There are a few ways that you can get to Randwick. Some of the more popular ways are of course via rideshare companies, such as taxis and Uber, you can take the 373 – departing from Museum Station – or 396 – deparing Martin Place Station – bus route, or get off the tram at Wansey Road station, which is about a 7-minute walk from the track.
If you have a bit more time up your sleeve on race morning and feel like getting out and seeing a few sights along the way to the races, it takes around an hour to walk from the CBD to Randwick, through Moore and Centennial Park.
Randwick race track specifications & details
The course proper at Randwick has a circumference of 2227m, and a 410m straight, making it the largest horse racing track in New South Wales. There are four chutes at Randwick: 1000m, 1100m, 1200m, 1400m and 1600m, while races held at Randwick range between 1000m and 3200m. The Randwick Course Proper is a turf track, as is the inner track – Randwick-Kensington – which is predominantly used for midweek metropolitan meetings and trials, while there are also grass, dirt and sand training tracks.
Major races held at Randwick
As we previously mentioned, 20 Group 1 races are run and won each year at Royal Randwick, along with The Everest and a host of other Group 2, Group 3 and Listed races. The Championships is the jewel in the crown for racing at Randwick, with eight Group 1 events held over back-to-back Saturdays, typically at the beginning of April. The Sydney Cup (3200m) is the staying feature at Randwick, while racing fans get to see the best sprinters in the world compete in the TJ Smith Stakes (1200m). The Doncaster Handicap (1600m) is one of Australia’s most famous and prestigious handicap races, while the Australian Derby (2400m) is one of the countries oldest events.
Some of the best horses have Group 1 races at Randwick, including Winx, Black Caviar, Sunline, Octagonal, and the great Phar Lap. In more recent times, Nature Strip has made the Randwick 1200m course his own, winning three consecutive TJ Smith Stakes (2020-2022) as well as the 2021 edition of The Everest, while Chautauqua also won three TJ Smith’s in a row (2015-2017).
