Eight metropolitan races will be run and won on the Kensington track at Royal Randwick on Wednesday afternoon, and HorseBetting’s New South Wales racing analyst brings you his best bets and quaddie numbers for the program. With rain around Sydney, the track is rated a Heavy 9, while the rail goes out 2m for the entire course. The first race of the day at Randwick-Kensington is set to jump at 1:45pm AEDT.
Best Bet – Lady Banff
We are going to have to wait for our best of the day as it comes up in the final race of the afternoon. Matt Dunn saddles up four-year-old mare Lady Banff in an 1100m Fillies & Mares Benchmark 72, where if she can repeat her last couple of runs, she will be winning. The grey daughter of Top Echelon ran second in a very tough Class 4 on the Gold Coast behind Lady Of Luxury, before going down by a lip to Joviality in a Fillies & Mares Benchmark 78 on February 5. She hasn’t raced since then, but she has been freshened and comes back to 1100m, which should suit, while the Heavy 9 track is going to suit her as well. From barrier 15, Lady Banff will be sent forward and she will take some running down.
Next Best – Cotehele
John O’Shea and apprentice Reece Jones combine in the penultimate race with three-year-old Cotehele. The son of Tavistock resumes gelded this preparation and has looked good in two trials leading up to this run. In his six career starts, Cotehele has won twice, both of which have been first-up, so we expect him to fire fresh on Wednesday in this Benchmark 72 over 1100m. O’Shea has opted to put Jones in the saddle, so rather than having to lug 61kg, the gelding gets in well with just 59kg, while barrier two is going to see him land in a terrific spot just off the speed. He should be able to return to the races as a winner at a decent price with Aussie bookies.
Best Value – Shooting For Kate
In the third race of the day, Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott saddle up three-year-old filly Shooting For Kate. The daughter of Shooting To Win has had just one start to date, finishing off strongly to run second on debut at Canberra on a Soft 7 track over 1300m. On that occasion, this filly was buried back on the fence with not a great deal of galloping room, but she was still able to pick herself up and run into second, some three and a half lengths behind the winner. Now stepping out to 1550m and with a senior rider in Tim Clark going into the saddle, Shooting For Kate can settle closer in the run from barrier two, where she will well and truly be within striking distance at the turn. Her debut run suggested she will handle the heavy conditions, while the rise in distance is going to suit her down to the ground.
