Although Flemington will hog the limelight on Melbourne Cup Day, HorseBetting’s New South Wales form analyst has picked out his best bets and quaddie selections for the nine-race card at Randwick on Tuesday. The track is rated a Good 4, while the rail is out 11m from the 1000m to the winning post and 8m for the remainder of the course. The first race of the day is set to jump at 11:40am AEDT.
Randwick Best Bet – Espiona
It was hard not to be impressed by what Espiona did on debut in the driving rain at Warwick Farm on October 13, and while the $1.60 is nothing to crow about, it should be a nice 60% return on investment two hours before the Melbourne Cup. The Chris Waller-trained filly had trialled brilliantly prior to her debut run, which saw her start at $1.45 in the 1200m contest, and she backed that trial form up with a 3.5-length victory. The daughter of Extreme Choice steps out to 1300m and does rise from a 3YO Maiden to a Benchmark 72, but from the inside alley under Tommy Berry, she should be in the box seat to remain unbeaten.
Next Best Bet at Randwick – Roots
Chris Waller-trained runners take up an eighth of the Melbourne Cup field at Flemington, but we are confident that he will steal the show at Randwick on Tuesday – again. In the fourth race, he saddles up three runners including the race favourite, Roots, who looks close to a good thing. On debut, Roots won well at Goulburn before going to the Listed Reginald Allen Quality, where she was beaten narrowly by her stablemate Fangirl. That horse has since franked the form by winning the Carbine Club Stakes at Flemington on Derby Day. Drawn in barrier 10 under Glyn Schofield, Roots will get back once again and be charging home over the top of them.
Randwick Value Bet – Elusive Jewel
John Thompson and Andrew Adkins combine in the fifth with last-start winner Elusive Jewel. The four-year-old mare has had eight starts for two wins and four minor placings and comes off a dominant win on the Kensington track on October 20 over 1550m, defeating Showtime Lady by 1.66 lengths. The daughter of Al Maher rises sharply to 2000m, which is going to suit, while barrier eight can allow her to get back off a hot speed and then charge home late. The $6 on offer is very tempting.
