The Archie Alexander-trained Bound For Home managed to cause a massive boilover in the 2022 Quezette Stakes, following an expert piece of riding from Declan Bates. Fresh from a six-week Irish holiday, Bates’ first ride back was a memorable one for many reasons. The original plan was for Bound For Home to have the field strung out when leading, but having jumped slowly from the gates, the pair had to settle three back the fence. Having settled on the heels of race favourite Waltz On By, Bound For Home was able to capitalise on some poor luck for the aforementioned Waltz On By and would quickly put her rivals away. Bound For Home would hold out the fast-finishing Ojai ($13) by a half-length, with I’mlovin’ya ($5.50) a further two-lengths behind the pair in third.

Despite being forced to travel three-wide with no cover, Peter Moody’s Gimmie Par proved a class above in the Quezette first-up from a four-month spell. A close relation to the unbeaten champion sprinter Black Caviar and a half-sister to Caulfield Guineas winner Ole Kirk, Gimmie Par landed her first stakes win in smart fashion. Sent off the $2.70 favourite under Jamie Kah, Gimmie Par held-off the fast-finishing Heresy ($12) by a half-length with on-pace runner Scorched Earth ($15) the same margin back in third.

In an unexpected turn of events, Bella Nipotina, the maiden filly, shed her luckless reputation by displaying remarkable swiftness and securing a surprising victory in the Group 3 Quezette Stakes (1100m). This triumph also marked a significant milestone for jockey Michael Rodd, who celebrated his first stakes win since his return to Melbourne racing after his stint in Singapore. Starting as a $20 chance, Bella Nipotina managed to put two-lengths on runner-up River Night ($10) and rank outsider Aquagirl ($51) in third. Rodd had Bella Nipotina settled outside the leader throughout the 1100m event and when asked to quicken, put the race away with relative ease.

First-up from a spell, Godolphin’s Exhilarates signalled her sprint intent with a dominant 1.5 length victory under Kerrin McEvoy. Sent around as a $7 chance, McEvoy had his filly settled midfield with cover and when asked for an effort with 300m to go, there was not another a horse punters wanted to be on. With 100m to go, Exhilarates gave Absolute Flirt ($8) windburn as she scorched on by the eventual runner-up, with Pin Sec ($26) a further 1.25 lengths behind Absolute Flirt in third.
