The 74th running of the Group 1 Queensland Oaks will take place at Eagle Farm this Saturday afternoon, with a full field of 18 three-year-old fillies set to do battle over 2200m. Australasian Oaks winner Affaire A Suivre will be looking to win her second Oaks in as many races, while Fireburn will be seeking her third Group 1 victory and goes into the race as the favourite after her win in The Roses last start. There will be two New Zealand raiders in this year’s edition, with Cheval D’or making the trip across the ditch and Sakura Girl coming through The Roses form line.

Queensland Oaks 2023 betting odds

The top two in the market with online bookmakers come through The Roses at Group 2 level, with the Gary Portelli-trained Fireburn currently the favourite at $3.80, closely followed by Renaissance Woman at $4.20. The only other runner in single figures is Affaire A Suivre, who sits on the third line of betting at $7. The New Zealand-trained fillies sit next in the market, with Sakura Girl at $13 and Cheval D’or sharing the fifth line of betting with Amokura and So Dazzling at $17.

Queensland Oaks 2023 speed map

There appear to be two likely leaders for this year’s edition of the Queensland Oaks, with Original Glaze (2) and Divine Purpose (4) expected to push forward from their respective inside barriers. Behind those two, we could see several runners push forward to find a prominent position, with Sakura Girl and Super Chilled crossing the field from out wide, while Reo and Proscenium Arch could hold a position from inside barriers. We should see all three of the race favourites — Fireburn, Renaissance Woman and Affaire A Suivre — out at the back of the field.

Queensland Oaks 2023 preview & form

Fireburn looks the one to beat after her dominant performance in The Roses last start. She has had an outstanding career to date, winning the Group 1 Golden Slipper and ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes as a two-year-old. If she is victorious in the Oaks, she will become the first to ever do the Golden Slipper–Queensland Oaks double. At Doomben last start, this daughter of Rebel Dane received a dream run up the inside before pulling clear in the final 100m to win by just under a length over Renaissance Woman. The only worry about the race favourite is that she will jump from barrier 16 and could be caught wide, unless Jason Collett produces another peach of a ride and can find the rail early on.

After breaking her maiden with a huge 8.8-length victory and then backing it up with a dominant two-length win at the Sunshine Coast two weeks ago, Amokura looks to be one of a few horses in the field that are well over the odds. The Kris Lees-trained filly doesn’t bring Group form like the top horses in the market; however, she possesses obvious upside and looks an intriguing play at the massive price with online betting sites ($17/$4.60). After drawing barrier one, we expect Damien Oliver to settle towards the rear on the rail and let this daughter of Kermadec settle in a rhythm, before getting the outside of the field and letting down with that explosive turn of foot that she has shown at her last two starts.

Affaire A Suivre must go into our numbers following a strong performance in the Australasian Oaks. After she was posted wide for most of the 2000m contest, she still had the audacity to kick clear with 200m to go and hold off all challengers in the final strides. Jockey John Allen has followed this daughter of Astern to Queensland, and we must respect the fact that she is under the care of top trainers Ciaron Maher and David Eustace, who have been in outstanding form.

The Roses runner-up Renaissance Woman has been very good in her last two starts, including a very nice win in at the Sunshine Coast back on May 6. Of the top few in the market, this girl has the best barrier draw (6), so that gives her a tactical advantage over her main rivals. However, this daughter of Reliable Man wasn’t strong enough at the end of 2000m to suggest that she can compete with the top few at 2200m on Saturday.
