The Queen Elizabeth Stakes (VRC) is a Group 3 race held at Flemington. The Queen Elizabeth Stakes follows Quality Handicap conditions for stayers over 2600m and boasts a prize-pool of $300,000.
In its early years, the Queen Elizabeth Stakes held the status of a Principal Race until 1979. The Queen Elizabeth Stakes, which has been raced as the Queens Cup, was then elevated to Group 2 status until 2004, before being downgraded to Group 3 in 2005.
Throughout its history, the Queen Elizabeth has been run at various distances. It initially covered three miles and later settled at 2400m in 1972. Since 2010, the race has been run at 2600m.
The Queen Elizabeth Stakes has gained recognition as a prominent race for imported horses. Notable winners include Francis Of Assisi, Dandino, Fantastic Love, Hatha Anna and True Self (twice).
Prior to True Self’s victories in 2019 & 2020, the last mare to triumph in the VRC Queen Elizabeth Stakes was Makybe Diva in 2002, marking the beginning of her remarkable reign. She would go on to win the Melbourne Cup, for the following three years.
An exceptional display of dominance was seen in 1998 when Might And Power, having already claimed victory in the Cox Plate, easily triumphed in the ATC Queen Elizabeth Stakes. Carrying 60kg and facing only five subpar opponents, he won by an astounding seven lengths while still under restraint.

Chris Waller may have found his top seed for the 2023 Melbourne Cup as his newest imported galloper, Soulcombe, destroyed his rivals in the Group 3 Queen’s Cup at Flemington. Having his first start in Australia, Soulcombe sat the back of the field over 2600m event and even though the leaders threw the anchors out and went at a slow tempo, the import showed a blistering turn of foot to put the quality field away with ease. Soulcombe was a drifting favourite before the race started, jumping as a $3 favourite with online bookmakers, but there was no worries for punters as he ended up running away with the prize by 2.25 lengths over Luncies and Captain Envious.

Warning made a triumphant comeback at Flemington by securing a victory in the Group 3 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2600m). The success can be attributed in large part to an exceptional front-running ride by Nash Rawiller. Having previously claimed the 2019 Group 1 Victoria Derby (2500m), Warning had not competed in a similar race at Flemington since his Melbourne Cup Carnival triumph two years ago. His subsequent six starts at the track were over shorter distances, except for the 2020 Melbourne Cup (3200m) where he finished 12th. Returning to the Queen Elizabeth Stakes, which offered an extra 100m compared to the Victoria Derby, proved to be the catalyst for Warning’s impressive performance. He displayed great determination, ultimately crossing the finish line 1.25 lengths ahead of Sound, the victor of the Group 2 Zipping Classic (2400m). Wentwood, the winner of the Group 3 Bendigo Cup (2400m), followed closely in third place, just a neck behind.

History repeated itself at Flemington as True Self, an Irish mare trained by Willie Mullins, defended her title in the Group 3 VRC Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2600m). Remarkably, True Self had been the first horse balloted out of the Melbourne Cup field for the second consecutive year. Ridden by jockey Hugh Bowman, True Self settled three back on the fence and faced difficulty finding clear running upon straightening. However, she managed to force her way between Creedence and Le Don De Vie, surging strongly inside the final 200m to win by a length. Pondus, who had previously finished as the runner-up in the Bendigo Cup, settled for second place once again. Chapada, the winner of the Herbert Power Stakes, finished a length behind in third place. True Self had been struggling for form, being unplaced in her six starts since her victory in last year’s Queen Elizabeth Stakes. Her misfortunes included a disastrous start in the Ebor Handicap, where she fell behind by 12 lengths, and a challenging run on a Soft 6 track in the Caulfield Cup, resulting in a 13th-place finish.

Willie Mullins celebrated his first victory in Australia at Flemington on Saturday, as True Self delivered an impressive performance to win the $300,000 VRC Queen Elizabeth Stakes. Ridden by jockey Ryan Moore, True Self effortlessly moved into a prominent position and surged forward with confidence, ultimately winning by a comfortable margin of 1.5 lengths. True Self’s triumph marked the 12th time that Mullins had sent a runner to Australia, having previously achieved notable successes with Max Dynamite, who finished second in the Melbourne Cup, and Simenon, who secured fourth place in the same prestigious race earlier in the decade. Mullins’ long-awaited victory added another milestone to his impressive career as a trainer, showcasing his ability to excel on the international stage.
