Hump day is upon us, and boy, oh boy, are we looking forward to another weekend on the punt! The Doomben Cup field was released yesterday, and we will get to that shortly. Add in the fact several Group 1 jockeys are set to make the trip north for the Queensland Winter Carnival, and anyone would think the Sunshine State is the place to be this time of year. Who knew?

On Tuesday morning the Doomben Cup field was announced, and we are willing to go out on a limb and say this is the greatest Doomben Cup field ever assembled. The race was postponed in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but the 2021 edition is more than capable of making up for that. Seven of the 12 runners in the field are Group 1 winners – Sir Dragonet, Fifty Stars, Avilius, Humidor, Melody Belle, Nettoyer and Toffee Tongue – while Zaaki and All-Star Mile winner Mugatoo will be looking to break through for their maiden Group 1 success. Throw in the likes of Shared Ambition, Southern France and Brandenburg, and gee whiz, we are set for a cracking event!

Jason Collett and Tim Clark are set to fly out to Brisbane in the coming days to take up some black-type rides during the Queensland Racing Carnival. Collett will be hoping connections pay the late nomination fee for Gytrash to get into the Kingsford Smith Cup. The South Australian star returned in The Goodwood last weekend with a sound third-place finish and is currently the $4.60 favourite with online bookmakers for the Kingsford Smith Cup despite not holding a nomination. Clark is set to board the plane with a big ride on Converge coming up in the BTC Sires’ Produce Stakes next weekend following the breathtaking trial Converge put in at Wyong on Monday morning. Clark and Collett will join Kerrin McEvoy and Hugh Bowman up north, while Glen Boss, Nash Rawiller and James McDonald have already tasted success in Queensland. Who would have thought leaving Sydney on the cusp of winter was a smart move?

Punt Drunk’s best bet of the day
Casting our minds back to the ‘Bool, Continuance was a dominant winner under similar conditions to what she gets on Wednesday at Ballarat. The former WA filly will look to take a sit off the speed, which should be genuine over the 1000m, and from barrier five Damien Oliver should have no issue in finding cover behind the leaders. When asked for an effort, Continuance should be storming past her opponents.
